Adults-Only Wedding Invitation Wording: 20 Polite Lines

Friday, August 21, 2026

Quick answer

Say it once, in plain words, where guests act on it: an adults-only line on the event, plus an invitation addressed only to the people invited. Name your entourage children as the one exception, give a reason once, and set each guest's seat count to match.

An adults-only wedding takes one decision and one sentence. The decision is easy once the caterer's per-head rate is in front of you. The sentence has to survive a family group chat without anyone feeling snubbed. Below are 20 lines to copy, where each one goes on your invitation, and how a seat limit enforces the rule so you do not have to argue it.

None of the four Philippine invitation guides we checked (Nuptials.ph, Kasal.com, Ink Scribbler and CloudInvites) has an adults-only line. The etiquette here comes from US and Australian stationers. The Philippine parts are your entourage children and how a personal link carries a seat count.

Decide what you mean first

"Adults only" covers at least five different rules, and guests assume the loosest one.

What you meanSay it as
No one under 18, anywhereAdults-only ceremony and reception
Children at church, not at the receptionAdults-only reception
An age cutoff, not a banGuests aged 16 and above
Only the entourage childrenAdults only, except our entourage
Nursing infants allowedBabies under 12 months welcome

There is no standard cutoff age. Paperlust, an online stationer, says most couples default to 18 and some use 16 to include teenagers. Deciduous Press, an Australian stationer, gives both in its examples.

Being direct matters more than being gentle. Paperlust calls a child-free wedding "entirely acceptable", and puts the weight on how clearly and kindly you say it. Ann's Bridal Bargains, a US retailer, warns that a vague rule means guests will arrive with toddlers. Deciduous Press says the clarity generally outweighs offending a handful of guests.

Our advice: use one line everywhere. If a cousin read the invitation and an aunt read the group chat, two versions send them to the wedding with different numbers of children.

20 adults-only lines to copy

Most lines are our own wording. Two borrow an idea: the seat-count line is a common phrase and Paperlust's reply-card example is close to it, and the 12-month age in the infant line is Paperlust's example. Swap the names, the age and the reason.

Full sentences for the details

We have chosen an adults-only reception. Apart from the children in our entourage, we kindly ask that this celebration be for adults.
Babies under 12 months are welcome at both the ceremony and the reception. Everyone else on the guest list is an adult.

With a reason, when the reason is real

Paperlust says you do not owe guests a reason on the invitation. Use one only if it is true.

Our venue seats a fixed number of guests, so we can only welcome the adults named on your invitation. Thank you for understanding.
The program runs late into the evening, so we are keeping the reception to adults. We hope you can join us.
Our budget lets us host only the guests named on your invitation, and we are grateful you understand.

A warmer tone

Use this only if the rest of your invitation is informal.

We would love to celebrate with you. This reception is for adult guests, and we hope this early notice helps you plan your evening.

If you arrange childcare

Send these only once the room and the sitter are booked.

The reception is adults-only, but we know some of you are traveling far. We have arranged a room at the hotel with a sitter from 6:00 PM. Reply with your children's ages if you would like a place.
If you are traveling and need help finding a sitter near the venue, message us and we will ask around.

Before the invitation goes out

Hi Rose! Before the invitations go out, a quick heads-up: our wedding on [date] is adults-only. We hope you can make it, and we are happy to help with ideas for childcare.

Replies to someone who asks

Hi Auntie! We would have loved to have the kids there, but we kept the reception adults-only for everyone except the entourage. Your two seats are reserved and we hope you can make it.
We understand, and we will miss you. It was a hard decision for us. We would love to celebrate with you separately after the wedding.
Thank you for replying! We can only seat the two guests named on your invitation. We are sorry we cannot include the children and hope to see you both.
Sending your personal link below. It is set up for the guests named on it, so please use your own link instead of forwarding it.
Mom and Dad, and our principal sponsors: if anyone asks about kids, please say the reception is adults-only apart from the entourage. Thank you for helping us keep it the same for everyone.

What not to write

Paperlust lists four phrases to avoid. "Adults only, please" on the main invitation face reads like a warning label. A bare "No children" is blunt. Telling guests you thought they would enjoy a night off comes across as presumptuous. An age rule such as "No one under 18" sounds like policy. Ann's Bridal Bargains, on the other hand, accepts a short note at the bottom of the invitation, so on this point the sources differ.

Narrow it by how you address the invitation

Ann's Bridal Bargains puts the addressing first: name only the adults, and the guest list is already narrower. Joy, a US wedding-website company, says "Mr. & Mrs. Smith" on the invitation signals an adult event, and suggests limiting the reply numbers as well. Paperlust adds that you should name the adults on both the outer and inner envelope.

FormatWhat narrows the list
PaperOnly the invited adults' names on the outer and inner envelope
Digital linkThe guest's name and seat count on their personal link

On Imbitasyon Ko, a personal link greets the guest by name on the cover with "Dear". A household can be one guest name with two seats, for example "Ben and Anna Santos". A forwarded shared link shows no name at all. See the guest list guide for entering names.

Name your entourage children as the exception

Your invitation names children by role, and a flat rule contradicts your own page. Paperlust says wedding-party children are typically understood as exceptions, and that you should confirm it with those families before invitations go out. On Imbitasyon Ko these roles print as their own headings.

RoleHeading on the page
Ring BearerBearers
Coin BearerBearers
Bible BearerBearers
Flower GirlsFlower Girls

Our ring, coin and Bible bearer guide describes them as usually the youngest members of the entourage. Put the exception in the same sentence as the rule, as in the entourage line above. Then decide whether they stay for the reception and tell their parents yourself. Our entourage duties guide covers what each role does on the day.

Where the line goes

Paperlust puts the note on the details card and website FAQ, not the invitation face. Ann's Bridal Bargains calls the reply card its favorite place to be clear. On an Imbitasyon Ko page, the equivalent places are:

WhereEditor fieldLimit
The event itselfEvents tab, Session (optional)80 characters, shown under the time
The event headingEvents tab, Event name80 characters, for example Reception (adults only)
Your closingFamily tab, Closing Message600 characters, replaces the standard closing body
The replyGuests page, Invite tab, Max persons1 to 10, default 2

Our advice: use the Session line for the rule and Max persons for enforcement. Keep the closing message for thanks.

Let the seat count carry the rule

A sentence is a request. A seat count is a limit. Each guest you add carries a Max persons value, and the reply form lists only the numbers up to it, so a guest set to 2 cannot answer with 4. The server applies the same cap when a reply arrives.

The limit belongs to the personal link, so send each guest their own link. A shared link has no guest attached, and the form falls back to allowing up to four. Names pasted in bulk are set to 2 by default, so edit anyone who should be 1. The Free plan covers 20 personal guest links, and Standard and Premium have no cap.

For the reply side, see our RSVP guide. The same count is what enforces a plus one policy. Guests wondering what your wording restricts can read what "invitation only" means. If the rule leaves you over capacity, see how to cut your guest list.

Announce it early, then answer the same way every time

Paperlust says to decide your infant policy before the first guest asks, and to allow 8 to 12 weeks so parents can arrange childcare. Our timing guide gives 6 to 8 weeks with a save the date and 10 to 12 without, so tell the families closest to you sooner.

  • Give the reason once. A paragraph of apology reads as an invitation to negotiate.
  • Grant no individual exceptions. Our advice: one exception becomes the new rule once the others find out.
  • Nursing infants are the one carve-out Paperlust calls entirely reasonable. Write it into the rule from the start.
  • Offer childcare only once it exists. A room and a hired nanny or sitter solve it for guests traveling in from the provinces. Naming a room you have not booked creates an expectation.
  • Brief the people who are likely to be asked. Your parents and principal sponsors get these questions before you do, so give them the sentence you published.

Choose one line, name the entourage exception in it, put it on the event, and set the seat counts to match. Then answer every follow-up with the sentence you already wrote. For the rest of your wording, see wedding invitation wording examples.

Frequently asked questions

How do you politely say no kids at a wedding?

Use a short, warm line such as Adults-only reception, and put it where guests read it: the event details or the reply. Give one reason at most, name the entourage children as the exception, and do not apologize at length. The 20 lines below cover the invitation, the details and replies to questions.

Is it rude to have an adults-only wedding?

It is your decision, and a clear rule is kinder than a vague one. Paperlust, an online stationer, says it is entirely acceptable and that clarity and kindness are what matter. Deciduous Press, an Australian stationer, says the clarity generally outweighs offending a handful of guests. Apply the rule to everyone.

Should you put no children on the wedding invitation itself?

Only briefly, and not on the main face. Ann's Bridal Bargains says a short note at the bottom works but prefers the reply card. Paperlust prefers the details card. On a digital invitation, put the line on the event and let the invited names and seat count do the rest.

Can flower girls and ring bearers come to an adults-only wedding?

Yes, if you treat them as the exception. Paperlust says wedding-party children are typically understood as exceptions, and that you should confirm it with their families before invitations go out. Decide whether they stay for the reception and tell their parents directly.

How do you stop guests bringing children when the invitation is a link?

Send each guest a personal link and set their Max persons. On Imbitasyon Ko the reply form offers no number above that limit. A shared link has no guest attached, so the form allows up to four.

What age counts as adults only?

There is no standard age. Paperlust says most couples default to 18 and some use 16 to include teenagers. Choose one, apply it to everyone and say it plainly, for example Guests aged 18 and above, please.
