What Does RSVP Mean on a Wedding Invitation? How to Reply

Sunday, September 20, 2026

Quick answer

RSVP stands for the French répondez s'il vous plaît, which means please respond. On a wedding invitation it asks you to reply yes or no by the date given, the way the invitation says, whether that is a link, a phone number or a card. Reply even if you cannot come.

You have an invitation with "RSVP" on it, and you want to know what it asks and how to answer. This page follows the order you will need it: the meaning, the reply-by line, your seat count, the reply itself, and what to do when plans change.

What RSVP means and what it asks

RSVP is the French phrase répondez s'il vous plaît, which means "please respond". Jotform and Bliss & Bone, a stationer, give that meaning. Bliss & Bone says an RSVP asks for three things.

It asks forWhat it means for you
A clear answerYes or no. "We'll try to make it" is not a reply
A timely answerBefore the reply-by date, because caterers and venues need final numbers weeks ahead
The details on the cardEveryone's names, the number attending, any meal or allergy line

Jotform says it is best to return a wedding RSVP ideally within a week of receiving the invitation. Bliss & Bone says a few days is ideal, rather than waiting for the deadline. Bliss & Bone also says a no is one of the most useful answers a host can get, because it lets them finalize numbers and, at a wedding, sometimes invite someone from a B-list.

Reading the RSVP line

In the Philippines it is often short. Ink Scribbler, a Philippine stationer, says the RSVP is usually one or two lines with the deadline and the number to contact. Look for these parts.

On the invitationWhat to do
A date, such as "Kindly reply by March 1"Reply on or before it
A name or numberReply to that person. It may not be the couple
A link, QR code or numberUse that channel, so your reply reaches the list
No date printedReply within a week, per Jotform
"Regrets only"Reply only if you cannot come. Silence is read as a yes, so ask if unsure
A line starting "M" on a printed reply cardWrite your title and name, such as Mr. or Ms. (Bliss & Bone)

On "regrets only", Bliss & Bone says you reply only if you cannot attend and silence is read as a yes. Couples usually need a count for a wedding, so if you are unsure, ask the host.

Bliss & Bone says couples typically send invitations 6 to 8 weeks before the wedding and set the reply-by date 3 to 4 weeks out. For the full calendar, see when to send wedding invitations.

How many seats you have

Bliss & Bone says the names on the invitation, and the number on the reply card, define who is invited. You cannot add a plus-one, a child or a friend by writing them in. If your invitation was addressed to you and one guest, the most you can enter is two. Our advice: if only some of the people named can come, say which ones, because a partial yes is still a usable answer.

Your invitationSeats
One nameOne
A couple or family named togetherThose people only
"[Name] and Guest"You and one companion
A link with no name on itAsk the couple, because the form sets its own limit

If your invitation is a link, the couple has set a maximum for your name and the form will not accept more. That maximum is a limit, not a promise that everyone up to it is invited, so ask if it is unclear. The plus-one policy guide explains how couples decide, and what "invitation only" means covers reading a personal link.

The sample lines in our wedding RSVP guide are ones hosts often place next to the RSVP. This is what each asks of you.

Line you may readWhat it asks of you
"[N] seat(s) are being kept for you"Reply for up to N people
"This invitation is for [Name(s)] only"Only those people are invited. Do not add anyone
"We give our caterer a final count on [Date]"Reply well before that date
"If you cannot come, please still let us know"Send a no, do not stay silent
"Please tell us about any allergies or dietary needs"Write them in your reply, since it is the route to the caterer

How to reply: nine messages to copy

Use the channel the invitation names. If it names none, message the person who sent it. Fill the brackets and send.

Yes

Hi [Host name], this is [Your name]. We will be at your wedding on [Date]. Please count [N] of us: [Names]. Thank you for inviting us!
Hi [Host name], [Your name] here. Yes, I will be there on [Date]. One note for the caterer: I have [allergy or dietary need]. Thank you!

Still waiting to hear back

Hi [Host name], thank you for inviting me! I am waiting on [reason], and I will give you a firm answer by [date before their deadline]. Is that all right?

No

Hi [Host name], thank you so much for inviting us. We cannot come on [Date], but we are happy for you both. I wanted you to know early.

Our guide to declining a wedding invitation politely has more wording by reason.

Before you reply: the seat question

Hi [Host name], thank you for the invitation! One question before I reply: does it include [Partner's name] or my children? I want to give you the right number.

Changing or late replies

Hi [Host name], I am so sorry to change my reply. I can no longer come on [Date] because [short reason]. I wanted you to know as early as I could. Congratulations to you both.
Hi [Host name], my plans changed and I would love to come after all. Could I change my reply to yes for [N]? If the list is already closed, I completely understand.
Hi [Host name], I am sorry I missed your reply-by date. Are you still able to count me in? If the list is closed, I understand.

When the invitation has no reply method

Hi [Host name], thank you for the invitation. I could not find how to reply, so I am telling you here: [Names] will attend on [Date]. Please tell me if you need it another way.

If your invitation is a link

On an Imbitasyon Ko invitation, you open the link and fill in a short form. A personal link fills in your name. Nothing is pre-selected, so opening the page does not count as a yes. After you choose yes, a field for the number attending appears, up to your maximum.

After you send, you see a thank-you and a summary of your answer, and an attending guest also sees "Save the date to your calendar" with two buttons, Google Calendar and Apple / Outlook Calendar. The event cards on the page carry the same buttons. A Change RSVP button sits on that confirmation. If you leave and open the page again, the form comes back filled in with your earlier answer and the note "You already replied. You can change your answer below." A personal link shows your earlier answer on any device, and the shared link shows it on the same device.

What happens if you never reply

Silence costs the couple time. Brideandbreakfast.ph says couples need the exact number to finalize the headcount with the caterer and venue, and that if a guest has not responded at all after the final deadline, it is acceptable to mark them as not attending. It also says a last-minute yes is up to the couple to squeeze in or not.

So a late reply may find the seat gone. If the deadline has passed, message anyway, using the late-reply line above. A late yes is still more useful than silence, but do not assume it can be added. Our RSVP follow-up guide shows the couple's side of that count.

Changing your answer

Tell the host as soon as you know. Bliss & Bone says an early change gives the host room to adjust a count or offer the seat to someone else.

  • Yes to no. Send the short message above. Apologize once and skip the long reason.
  • No to yes. Ask, do not assume. Our advice is that the couple may have closed the list.

Frequently asked questions

What does RSVP stand for on a wedding invitation?

RSVP stands for the French phrase répondez s'il vous plaît, which means please respond. Jotform and Bliss & Bone both give this meaning. On a wedding invitation it is the hosts asking whether you will attend.

Do you have to RSVP if you are not attending?

Yes. Bliss & Bone says a no is one of the most useful answers a host can get, because it lets them finalize numbers and sometimes invite someone from a B-list. Silence is the hardest reply to plan around.

How soon should you RSVP to a wedding invitation?

As soon as you know, and no later than the reply-by date. Jotform says ideally within a week of receiving the invitation. Bliss & Bone says the reply-by date is usually 3 to 4 weeks before the wedding.

What does regrets only mean on an invitation?

Bliss & Bone says it means you reply only if you cannot attend, and silence is read as a yes. Couples usually need a count, so if a wedding invitation says this and you are unsure, ask the host.

Can you bring a plus-one or kids if the invitation does not name them?

No. Bliss & Bone says the names on the invitation and the number on the reply card define who is invited, and you cannot add a plus-one or a child by writing them in. If it is unclear, ask the hosts before you reply.

What happens if you miss the RSVP deadline?

Reply now and apologize briefly. Bliss & Bone says a late yes is still useful to a host. Brideandbreakfast.ph says a couple may mark a silent guest as not attending once the final deadline has passed, so the seat may already be gone.

Can you change your RSVP after replying?

Tell the host as soon as you know. On an Imbitasyon Ko invitation you can use Change RSVP on the confirmation, or open the page again, where the form shows your earlier answer with a note that you can change it. A guest with a personal link sees the earlier answer on any device.
