Wedding Monogram Ideas: Styles, Letters and Where to Use It
Monday, October 5, 2026
Quick answer
A wedding monogram is a small mark built from the couple's initials, most often the two first initials, sometimes with the shared surname initial or the date. Pick one of six styles, set the letters in one or two fonts, use your motif colors, and check it at thumbnail size before putting it on stationery.
A wedding monogram, also called a wedding logo or emblem, is a small mark made from your initials that you repeat on everything from the invitation to the souvenirs. This guide covers six monogram styles, the letters you can put in one, how letter order works, five steps to make your own, and twelve places to use it, including what a digital invitation can and cannot do with it.

What goes into a wedding monogram
The usual answer is the two first initials. Vistaprint's guide says a monogram can also carry first and last initials, full names, the wedding date and other details. Its example: a couple named Stephanie and Sam might make an S & S monogram.
| Letters | Example for Maria and Jose Santos | Good when |
|---|---|---|
| Two first initials | M & J | You want the simplest mark |
| Two initials plus surname initial | M S J | You share a surname and want a formal look |
| Surname initial only | S | You want one bold letter |
| Full first names | Maria & Jose | The mark will be large, such as signage |
| Initials with the date | M & J, with your wedding date | You want a save-the-date feel |
Six monogram styles
Styles differ in how the letters relate to each other and what surrounds them. Vistaprint notes that a circle around the initials can signify a wedding ring, and that a floral wreath can signal a garden wedding. The remaining styles are our own groupings.
| Style | Look | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Interlocking | Two letters overlap or link | Classic and romantic weddings |
| Three-letter | Surname initial large in the center | Formal, church or hotel weddings |
| Circle or ring | Initials inside a circle | Any theme; echoes the rings |
| Wreath or crest | Initials framed by leaves or flowers | Garden and Filipiniana looks |
| Minimal | Two clean letters with generous space | Modern minimal and small prints |
| With date | Initials plus the wedding date underneath | Save-the-dates, tags, stickers |
How letter order works
For a three-letter mark, a personalized-jewelry retailer's guide gives two traditional orders for a married couple, with the surname initial in the center and larger. It adds that these are guidelines and a matter of preference. For two initials, the two sources above do not prescribe an order, so there is no single rule.
| Layout | Reading order | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Bride, surname, groom | M S J | The retailer's first traditional order |
| Groom, surname, bride | J S M | The retailer's alternative order |
| Two initials | M & J or J & M | Pick what looks balanced; no source sets a rule |
How to make your own, in 5 steps
- Choose the letters. Use the table above. Sketch two or three versions on paper first; Vistaprint suggests sketching options to see what suits you.
- Pick the style. Match it to your venue and motif. See our guide to Philippine wedding motifs and color palettes if your theme is still open.
- Set the font. Vistaprint's guide ties an elegant script to a formal black-tie event and a more whimsical font to a casual backyard wedding. Use one font, or at most two.
- Add your colors. Take one or two colors from your motif. Also save a one-color version in black or white for places where color is not possible.
- Test it small. Shrink it to the size of a favor sticker and to the size of a phone thumbnail. If the letters blur, simplify or enlarge them.
Three ways to get the artwork:
| Way to make it | Suits | Files to ask for |
|---|---|---|
| Free monogram generator or design app | Tight budgets; quick results | Transparent-background PNG, one-colour version |
| Hire a designer or an Etsy maker | Custom lettering, watercolor or calligraphy | Vector file (SVG or PDF), PNG, one-colour version |
| Hand-drawn doodle, then cleaned up | A personal look | A clean scan, then ask a designer to vectorize it |
Greetings Island's guide lists these three routes: a generator (many are free), an Etsy artist (it says custom monograms start as low as 10 bucks) and doodling. The file types in the table are our advice, and Vistaprint also advises asking a designer for a digital file. If the font is not one you own, check its licence allows commercial use before printing or selling anything with it.
Where to use it
Vistaprint lists save-the-dates, invitations, response cards, place cards, seating charts and thank-you cards. The table adds a few more places and one idea for each.
| Where | Idea |
|---|---|
| Save-the-date | Keep it large enough to recognize at a glance |
| Invitation | Place it at the top, away from the text |
| Program booklet | Small on the cover; see what goes in a program booklet |
| Welcome sign | Use the full-size, clear version |
| Place cards | One color, small, in a corner |
| Wax seal | A single bold shape without thin lines |
| Napkins | One-color print or stamp |
| Menus | Small mark above the dish list |
| Cake | Ask the baker whether a topper or icing works |
| Favors | One-color sticker; see favor ideas |
| Thank-you cards | Same mark as the invitation |
| Social posts | Pair with your wedding hashtag |
Using it on a digital invitation
Imbitasyon Ko has no dedicated monogram slot in the invitation page or editor. The cover shows "The Wedding of", your couple names and the first event date, over the theme's artwork.
You can still upload an image of your monogram. The editor accepts JPEG, PNG and WebP images in two places. The cover photo is shown at half opacity under a fade, so a monogram works poorly there. A gallery photo shows the image as a normal gallery picture, and it counts toward your plan's photo limit. Neither is a styled logo placement. Use whichever you prefer, and send the monogram on printed pieces, where it has more room.

How do you make a wedding monogram?
Choose the letters, pick a style, set them in a font that fits your wedding, use colors from your motif, and test the result at small sizes. You can do this in a design app or ask a graphic designer, and ask for a digital file for your invitation.
