Wedding Invitation Size Guide: Standard Dimensions and Envelopes
Monday, October 5, 2026
Quick answer
The most common wedding invitation size is 5 x 7 inches (127 x 178 mm), mailed in an A7 envelope of 5 1/4 x 7 1/4 inches (133 x 184 mm). RSVP and details cards are usually 3.5 x 5 or 4 x 6 inches. Sources differ on the smaller pieces, so the tables below show where.
You need three answers before you order or design a wedding invitation: the size of the main card, the size of each insert, and the envelope that holds them. This guide gives the common sizes in inches and millimetres, shows where stationers disagree, explains how the ISO A-series differs from the US-style envelope names, and covers bleed, paper weight and the digital equivalent.
Dimensions below come from stationers and printers, ISO tables on Wikipedia, and one Philippine postal order. Where two sources disagree, both are in the table. Millimetre figures marked "our conversion" are inches multiplied by 25.4 and rounded.

Main card and insert sizes
Paperlust calls 5 x 7 inches (127 x 178 mm) the standard and says it sits inside an A7 envelope. 4OVER4 agrees and adds that size follows formality: bigger cards read as more formal. The two sources split on the inserts, so the table shows each.
| Piece | Paperlust | 4OVER4 |
|---|---|---|
| Main invitation | 5 x 7 in (127 x 178 mm) | 5 x 7 in (127 x 178 mm) |
| Compact main card | 4.25 x 5.5 in | 4.25 x 5.5 in (108 x 140 mm) |
| Postcard format | 4 x 6 in | 4 x 6 in (102 x 152 mm) |
| Large card | Not listed | 5.5 x 8.5 in (140 x 216 mm) |
| RSVP card | 3.5 x 5 or 4 x 6 in | 3.5 x 5 in (89 x 127 mm) |
| Details card | 3.5 x 5 or 4 x 6 in | 4.25 x 5.5 in (108 x 140 mm) |
| Save the date | 4 x 6 or 5 x 7 in; own range 5.51 x 4.21 in | 4.25 x 5.5 or 5 x 7 in |
| Thank-you card | Not listed | 4.25 x 5.5 in (108 x 140 mm) |
Paperlust's page is not consistent on the RSVP card: its summary line reads "RSVP cards: A2 (4.25 x 5.5″) is standard", while its table and RSVP section give 3.5 x 5 and 4 x 6 inches. Treat RSVP size as a choice, and let the return envelope decide it.
Square, slim and folded formats
Square and slim cards are less common. Sources give different square sizes, so check the exact size of the template you pick.
| Format | Size given | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Square | 5.25 x 5.25 in (133 mm) | 4OVER4 |
| Square | 5.78 x 5.78 in (147 mm) | Paperlust |
| Square | 5.25, 5.875 and 6.25 in | Joy |
| Larger rectangle | 6.5 x 8.75 in (our conversion: 165 x 222 mm) | Joy |
| Slim | 4 x 9 in (102 x 229 mm) | 4OVER4 |
| Slim | 4 x 9.25 in (our conversion: 102 x 235 mm) | Joy |
| Bifold | Folds from 7 x 10 in to 5 x 7 in | Paperlust |
| Arch or die-cut | Same outer rectangle as a 5 x 7 in card | Paperlust |
Paperlust adds that a die-cut card is boxed in a rectangle, and the envelope is sized to that rectangle, not to the shape.
Envelope sizes that fit
North American invitation envelopes use names such as A2 and A7. Wikipedia notes these names do not correspond to ISO paper sizes. This table is from its envelope page, with the stationer pairing from the sources above.
| Envelope | Inches | mm | Card it is paired with |
|---|---|---|---|
| A2 | 4 3/8 x 5 3/4 | 111 x 146 | 4.25 x 5.5 in card; RSVP return envelope (Paperlust) |
| A6 | 4 3/4 x 6 1/2 | 121 x 165 | 4 x 6 in card |
| A7 | 5 1/4 x 7 1/4 | 133 x 184 | 5 x 7 in card |
| A8 | 5 1/2 x 8 1/8 | 140 x 206 | Wikipedia lists A7 as suitable content |
| A9 | 5 3/4 x 8 3/4 | 146 x 222 | 5.5 x 8.5 in card (4OVER4) |
| A10 | 6 x 9 1/2 | 152 x 241 | Larger flat cards; no pairing given |
4OVER4's rule of thumb is an envelope about a quarter inch larger than the card in each direction. Paperlust adds that inserts should stay at least 0.25 inch smaller than the envelope opening on each side. Its page also gives two square envelope sizes (6.25 and 5.75 inches) in different places, so confirm the envelope before ordering a square card.
ISO A-series vs US-style sizes
Under ISO 216, A5 is 148 x 210 mm and A6 is 105 x 148 mm. ISO 269 envelopes were designed for them, although ISO 269 was withdrawn in 2009 without replacement (Wikipedia).
| Card | Size | Matching envelope | Envelope size |
|---|---|---|---|
| A6 | 105 x 148 mm | C6 | 114 x 162 mm |
| A5 | 148 x 210 mm | C5 | 162 x 229 mm |
| One-third of A4 (slim) | 99 x 210 mm (our calculation) | DL | 110 x 220 mm |
Do not mix the two systems: a US A6 envelope (121 x 165 mm) is not the ISO A6 card. A 5 x 7 in card (127 x 178 mm) is wider than an ISO A6 card and narrower than A5, so it does not fit a C6 envelope (114 mm wide).
For the Philippines, Wikipedia's paper size article says the country officially adopted the ISO standard in government offices, but US Letter is still widely used in everyday life. So both systems are in circulation. We found no source that states which card size Philippine print shops usually quote, so ask your printer which trim size and envelope they stock.
Mailing inside the Philippines
PHLPost Administrative Order 00-10, dated 27 December 2000 and effective 1 January 2001, set a minimum of 9 cm x 14 cm for ordinary mail. Later orders have revised rates, and we could not confirm the size rule is unchanged or how a mailed invitation is classed. Ask your post office. The last row is our comparison, not a PHLPost ruling.
| Piece mailed | Size | Against the 9 x 14 cm minimum |
|---|---|---|
| A7 envelope | 133 x 184 mm | Above |
| A2 return envelope | 111 x 146 mm | Above |
| 3.5 x 5 in RSVP card without envelope | 89 x 127 mm (4OVER4) | Below |
Paperlust says square envelopes can need a non-machinable surcharge, but that refers to USPS. We found no source on whether PHLPost does the same, so ask when you price a square card.
Bleed, margins and paper
If you design your own file, Paperlust and 4OVER4 agree on the basics.
| Setting | Value | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Bleed | 0.125 in (3 mm) on all four sides | Both |
| Artboard for a 5 x 7 in card | 5.25 x 7.25 in | Paperlust |
| Safe zone | 0.125 in inside trim (both); 0.25 in is safer (Paperlust) | Both |
| Resolution | 300 DPI | Both |
| Colour | CMYK | Both |
Paperlust's paper guide says professional wedding invitations are typically printed on 300 to 380 gsm stock, roughly 110 to 140 lb cover, and that most home printers cap out around 216 to 270 gsm. Its conversions: 216 gsm is 80 lb, 270 gsm 100 lb, 300 gsm 110 lb, 350 gsm 120 lb, 380 gsm 140 lb.

The digital equivalent
A digital invitation has no trim size, so there is nothing to order. On a hosted page, what matters is what guests see in a chat and on a phone. For Imbitasyon Ko, we checked the code for these:
| Item | Value | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Link preview image | 1200 x 630 px, PNG | opengraph-image.tsx |
| Preview content | Both names, first event date, site name, theme colours | Same file |
| Invitation body | One column, max 480 CSS px wide | invitation-view.tsx |
The preview is generated from your names and date, so you do not design it. Our conversion for the 5 x 7 card shape: at the 480 px column width, a 5 x 7 ratio would be 672 px tall, so a long scroll is expected. Our guide to digital vs printed invitations explains when to use each, when to send them covers timing, and the themes page shows the layouts.
Pick sizes in this order
- Choose the main card: 5 x 7 in is the safe default.
- Choose the envelope that fits it with a quarter inch of room.
- Size the RSVP and details cards to fit that envelope together.
- Ask the printer for their trim size, bleed and file type.
- If the card is square, slim or folded, price the envelope before the card.
Settle the main card and envelope first, because every insert and the postage follow from them.
Frequently asked questions
What size should a wedding invitation be?
Most stationers treat 5 x 7 inches (127 x 178 mm) as the standard main card. Paperlust and 4OVER4 both give that size. Smaller 4.25 x 5.5 and 4 x 6 inch cards are also sold, and the ISO A6 size is 105 x 148 mm.
What size envelope fits a 5 x 7 wedding invitation?
An A7 envelope, which measures 5 1/4 x 7 1/4 inches (133 x 184 mm). 4OVER4 describes the envelope as about a quarter inch larger than the card in each direction.
What size is an RSVP card?
Sources differ. Paperlust lists 3.5 x 5 or 4 x 6 inches, while its text also names A2 at 4.25 x 5.5 as standard. 4OVER4 lists 3.5 x 5 inches. Check which return envelope your RSVP card needs before you print.
What size are wedding invitations in A5 and A6?
Under ISO 216, A5 is 148 x 210 mm and A6 is 105 x 148 mm. The matching ISO 269 envelopes are C5 at 162 x 229 mm and C6 at 114 x 162 mm. North American envelope names such as A7 are a different system.
How much bleed should I add to a wedding invitation file?
Paperlust and 4OVER4 both say 0.125 inches (3 mm) on every side. Keep names and dates inside the trim line too. Paperlust suggests 0.25 inches for more breathing room.
What size should a digital wedding invitation be?
It depends on the platform. On Imbitasyon Ko the link preview image is generated at 1200 x 630 pixels, and the invitation itself is a single column no wider than 480 CSS pixels. You do not upload a card size.
