Wedding HMUA in the Philippines: Booking, Trials and Rates

Sunday, October 18, 2026

Quick answer

HMUA means hair and makeup artist. Nuptials.ph's 2023 guide lists bridal packages at ₱7,500 to ₱30,000, plus ₱4,000 to ₱9,000 per bridal party head, with out-of-town fees, extra heads and retouches often billed on top. Book a trial, then confirm call time, headcount and retouch hours in writing before paying a deposit.

A wedding HMUA (hair and makeup artist) shapes how calm your morning is, and the terms you confirm before paying a deposit decide most of it. This guide covers what packages include, the rates Philippine sources publish, how a trial works, how to turn heads into a call time, and the questions to ask before paying a deposit.

What a wedding HMUA package covers

Nuptials.ph (May 2023) defines these terms. Learn them before you compare quotes, because two packages with the same price can include different things.

TermWhat it means in a quote
Package dealUsually the bride, the groom if he dresses at the same venue, and about two to five extra heads
Additional headsCost extra beyond the package
Out-of-town (OOT) feeRates usually exclude transport and overnight stay; some artists use a fixed fee, others price by distance
RetouchThe artist stays until after the ceremony for one retouch before the reception
Unli-retouchThe artist stays a set number of hours, usually 3 to 5, for as many retouches as needed
Prenup makeupSome rates cover the prenup shoot and the wedding; others sell it separately
Number of looksTimes the artist fully changes your hair and makeup, for example ceremony then reception
Airbrush or traditionalAirbrush is sprayed on; the same source says it is waterproof and can supposedly last up to 15 hours
Men's groomingMostly hair, so cheaper; only offered if the groomsmen are at the same venue

Wedding HMUA rates in the Philippines

Published Philippine rates are scarce, and the figures below are one planning site's 2023 ranges, not a market survey.

Nuptials.ph says price depends on the package, the makeup used (airbrush or traditional), the artist's clientele and the number of looks. The Beauty Edit adds that artists price for the whole day: Aldrin Jalandoni says the fee covers the ceremony, the beauty shoots and the reception look, and that his team takes no other clients that day. He puts a bridal kit at a six-digit investment, which is his own figure. Nuptials.ph suggests setting aside 10 to 15% of the overall wedding budget for HMUA, and says some brides have the bridal party chip in while others pay for everyone; settle this and discuss payment options with the artist before booking. For prenup-only hair and makeup, see the budget range in our prenup photo guide.

When to book your HMUA and your trial

Nuptials.ph's 2020 countdown, summarized in our vendor guide, says to start on the HMUA at about 11 months and do the trial at about 3 months. Paperlust, a stationery site whose prices are in US dollars, suggests a trial 2 to 4 months out, once the dress, venue and flowers are fixed.

Trial lengthFour to five hours, two looks (Chuchie Ledesma)1.5 to 3 hours, hair and makeup
Is it required?Generally not, if you know your lookStrongly recommended for a new artist or complex look
CostNot statedUS$100 to US$300 makeup; US$100 to US$250 hair

Both agree a trial shows how the look wears over hours.

  1. Pick two or three reference photos of looks you like, plus one you dislike.
  2. Bring your veil or headpiece, earrings and a white or cream top to judge the look against your dress.
  3. Bring one trusted person. Paperlust says more guests crowd the room.
  4. Tell the artist about allergies and skin conditions first.
  5. Ask whether the trial is credited toward the package; Paperlust says some artists do this.
  6. Keep the look on for the day and photograph it indoors, outdoors in sun and under overhead lights.
  7. Send the photos to your artist, with a note of what to change.

Schedule facials, chemical peels and other skin treatments well before the wedding. Jalandoni tells The Beauty Edit they can leave skin sensitive, red or with temporary marks that are hard to cover.

Trial makeup and your prenup shoot

The Beauty Edit reports that brides in Reddit threads have booked a regular glam session or a trial and then gone straight to a shoot. Artists respond differently: some wipe the trial makeup off or do half a face, while others want brides to wear it to the prenup to see how it lasts. Ledesma says she asks questions upfront and will not accept future bookings from clients who deceive her to get a lower rate. Tell your artist what you plan to do, and ask whether the prenup is in the package.

Call time math: heads times minutes

Your artist's call time comes from how many people sit in the chair. These figures are published estimates; replace them with your artist's.

Our arithmetic, for a bride's artist who then does every extra head alone, with setup added:

GroupOne artistTwo artists (second does all extra heads)
Bride only2.5 to 3 hours2.5 to 3 hours
Bride and 2 heads3.5 to 4.5 hours2.5 to 3 hours
Bride and 4 heads4.5 to 6 hours2.5 to 3.5 hours

Joy's figure may include hair, and Ledesma's covers makeup; ask whether hair is extra. Count back from your confirmed ceremony time using the steps in our wedding day timeline. The Beauty Edit warns that coordinator briefings and photographers often interrupt the session, so leave a buffer.

Questions to ask before you pay the deposit

  1. Who will do my makeup on the day, the artist from the trial or a team member?
  2. What start time do you need, and how long for me and for each extra person?
  3. How many heads are in the package, and what is the price per extra head?
  4. How many artists work in parallel, and when do you bring an assistant?
  5. Is a retouch included, or unli-retouch, and for how many hours?
  6. Is there an out-of-town fee, and does it cover transport and overnight stay?
  7. Is the trial paid, and is it credited to the package?
  8. Is prenup makeup included, and how many looks are in the package?
  9. Is it airbrush or traditional, and what do you use to make it last?
  10. What is your backup if you cannot come?
  11. What are your deposit, balance and cancellation terms?
  12. What should we provide for the team, such as meals?

Question 12 comes from The Beauty Edit, which lists being on time and feeding the team as essentials. Put the answers in writing; our vendor guide has the contract check, and our survival kit checklist says who holds the touch-up kit.

Heat and humidity: what Philippine makeup artists say

These tips are for everyday wear from Philippine sources, not tests of bridal makeup. Use them as questions for your artist.

Paperlust says a bridal look should hold for 8 to 12 hours, so ask the artist how they will do that for your venue.

Next steps

Shortlist two artists, book a trial for about three months before the wedding, and compare quotes on the same terms: heads, retouch hours, travel and prenup. Then tell your coordinator and photographer the call time.

Frequently asked questions

What does HMUA mean in a Philippine wedding?

HMUA means hair and makeup artist. Nuptials.ph uses the term for the professional who does the bride's hair and makeup, and often the bridal party's too, under a package.

How much does a wedding HMUA cost in the Philippines?

Nuptials.ph's 2023 guide gives ₱7,500 to ₱30,000 for a bride-only package, ₱4,000 to ₱9,000 per bridal party head and ₱800 to ₱1,500 per head for men's grooming. The Beauty Edit says bridal rates can easily reach five figures. Ask for a written quote.

Do you need a makeup trial for your wedding?

Not always. The Beauty Edit says a trial is generally not necessary if you know the look you want or have worked with your artist, but helpful if you have several reference photos to test; Ledesma adds that a reference photo is very different from seeing the look on your own face. Paperlust, a stationery site, calls it strongly recommended for a new artist or a complex look.

How long does bridal makeup take?

Makeup artist Chuchie Ledesma told The Beauty Edit that bridal makeup takes her about 2 to 2.5 hours, against about 1.5 hours for a regular look. Ask your own artist for a figure for you and for each extra person.

Should the HMUA stay for retouches?

Ask what the package covers. Nuptials.ph describes three options: no retouch, one retouch before the reception, or unlimited retouches for a set number of hours, usually 3 to 5. Some rates include them and others charge an upgrade.

Is airbrush makeup better for a Philippine wedding?

No source we found proves it. Nuptials.ph says airbrush is waterproof and can supposedly last up to 15 hours, and lists it as a price driver. Ask the artist how they make any look last in heat.
