Wedding Entourage Attire Philippines: Barong and Gowns by Role
Saturday, August 22, 2026
Quick answer
In a Filipino entourage the men wear a barong tagalog and the women a gown or Filipiniana dress. The groom wears the most detailed barong, groomsmen simpler ones in the same color family, and ninangs cream or off-white rather than the bridesmaids' color. Share the palette and fabric 4 to 6 months ahead.
A Filipino entourage can run to thirty people, and each one has to buy or commission an outfit. Say "barong and long gown" and you will get eight shades of beige and one ninong in the barong he already owned. This guide covers 14 named entourage roles, who should match whom, how barong fabrics rank on price, when to send instructions, and style notes you can paste into the group chat.
If you need the dress code line for your guests instead, see our dress code guide.

What each role wears
The role names below are the ones Imbitasyon Ko's entourage editor and entourage list tool use, in the order the invitation groups them. Budgets are from Storia's Filipiniana styling guide, a Philippine wedding-supplier marketplace blog, and are its estimates for a Filipiniana-themed wedding.

| Principal Sponsors | Ninongs: barongs or tuxedos in neutral, subdued tones. Ninangs: dresses or gowns in cream or off-white, not the bridesmaids' color | Nuptials.ph |

| Veil Sponsors | Same as candle sponsors | Nuptials.ph |

Sources: Casa Barong's outfit guide and Barong World's traditions guide are barong retailers' blogs. The principal sponsor row is from Nuptials.ph's sponsor comparison. For ninongs and ninangs, Casa Barong adds a premium embroidered or piña organza barong, a refined Filipiniana dress, and "champagne, ivory, beige, blush and muted gold" as sponsor colors.
The secondary sponsor row follows Nuptials.ph's secondary sponsor FAQ. Its comparison page is lighter: a formal blouse and skirt with a shawl for women, and cream or off-white long-sleeved polo shirts for men. Pick one and say which. Our secondary sponsors guide sets the two side by side, and our ring bearer guide covers what the bearers carry.
Filipiniana styles for the women
"Filipiniana" covers several silhouettes, so name the one you mean. The Maria Clara row is from Bride and Breakfast's dress code guide, a Philippine wedding blog.
| Style | What sets it apart | Who it suits |
|---|---|---|
| Terno | Butterfly sleeves, which Storia calls "the defining feature," with a fitted bodice | Mothers and ninangs: Casa Barong suggests a "formal terno inspired outfit" for mothers, and Storia a terno for ninangs |
| Maria Clara gown | Bride and Breakfast says it "combines Filipino and Spanish influences" | Our suggestion: sponsors who want a formal, traditional look |
| Modern Filipiniana | Barong World says the butterfly sleeve stays "the signature detail" on newer silhouettes | Bridesmaids; Storia suggests terno tops with modern skirts |
Our advice: give ninangs the formal end, bridesmaids the modern end, and one shared detail such as the sleeve so the group still reads as one party.
Who matches whom
Most mix-ups come from not saying which roles should look alike.
| Group | Rule | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Groom and groomsmen | The groom wears the most detailed barong; groomsmen wear simpler versions in the same color family | Casa Barong, Barong World |
| Bridesmaids | One shade or one fabric | Casa Barong |
| Ninangs and bridesmaids | Different: ninangs "should not wear the color motif of the bridesmaids and flower girls" | Nuptials.ph |
| Secondary sponsors and wedding party | They "don't need to wear the same outfits as your bridesmaids and groomsmen, unless they're doing double-duty" | Nuptials.ph |
| Children | Scaled-down versions of the adults' outfits | Barong World |
Barong fabrics, ranked by cost
Fabric moves the price more than anything else. Barong World's fabric guide ranks the four common ones:
| Fabric | What it is | Cost | Barong World's note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Piña | Woven from the fibers of red Spanish pineapple leaves | Highest | "The finest of all hand-woven fabrics in the country" |
| Jusi | "A silk type material," softer and more opaque than organza | Below piña | For looking "more classic and more refined" without spending heavily |
| Jusilyn | Machine-woven from cotton or silk with polyester, made to mimic jusi | Below jusi | Even texture, without the streaks of jusi or piña |
| Organza | A sheer polyester and silk blend | Lowest | "Typically not the best option if you want a low-key barong for a wedding" |
For peso prices, Storia puts a machine-embroidered barong at ₱3,000–₱15,000, a hand-embroidered piña barong at ₱15,000–₱50,000+, and rentals at ₱2,000–₱5,000. These are Storia's estimates, not quotes. Organza is cheapest, so say the fabric in writing before twelve groomsmen buy the cheapest barong on the rack.
Church rules to put in the instructions
For a church ceremony, Nuptials.ph's secondary sponsor FAQ says female secondary sponsors may not wear "plunging necklines, bare backs, or see-through material," a strapless or sleeveless gown needs a shawl, and men may not wear "shorts, denim pants, leather jackets, or anything too sporty and casual." Our advice is to send the same rule to every role. A couple who planned their own Catholic wedding in the Philippines writes that appropriate clothing covers "the cleavage, thighs, underarm" (Our Budget Dream Wedding). Rules vary by parish, so confirm with yours.
When to send what
| When | What | Source |
|---|---|---|
| 4–6 months before | Share the color palette and fabric with the entourage | Storia |
| 2–3 months before | Order for a full entourage; Barong World says to allow this long | Barong World |
| Before anyone shops | Lock the palette, so dye lots and fabrics match across pairs | Our advice |
| One month before | Final fitting check and a reminder of the church rules | Our advice |
Style notes to paste into the group chat
Color names fail in group chats: "sage" and "mint" look different on every phone, and so does "dusty blue" (our dusty blue wedding motif guide shows how to brief it by hex code). Send a swatch photo with each note, and give each role one line: color, length, fabric and shoes. Fill in the brackets and copy.
Principal Sponsors: ninongs in an ivory or cream barong with black slacks and black shoes. Ninangs in a long cream or off-white gown. Please avoid [bridesmaids' color], which our bridesmaids are wearing.
Candle, Veil and Cord Sponsors: ladies in a long gown in cream or [motif color]; gentlemen in a [cream] long-sleeved polo with black or dark brown slacks.
Groomsmen: [jusi] barong in [ivory], untucked, over a white undershirt, with black slacks and black leather shoes. Please order from [supplier] by [date] so the fabric matches.
Bridesmaids: [color] Filipiniana dress, floor length, in [fabric]. Nude or gold heels. Please send a photo before you buy.
Church reminder: no bare shoulders, bare backs or see-through fabric during the ceremony. Bring a shawl if your gown is strapless or sleeveless.
Your entourage will look for these notes again three weeks later, so keep them in one pinned place. The entourage list tool builds the full list as copyable text, grouped under the invitation's group headings, with role names. The Dress Code section of your invitation is for guests, since every guest sees it, so keep role-by-role notes in the entourage chat.
Decide the fabric before the color, and say which roles match and which stand apart. If you are still choosing who fills each role, our entourage guide explains every position, and how to ask your ninong and ninang covers the conversation that comes first.
Frequently asked questions
What do principal sponsors wear at a Filipino wedding?
Nuptials.ph recommends dresses or gowns in cream or off-white for ninangs, and barongs or tuxedos in neutral, subdued tones for ninongs. Casa Barong suggests a premium embroidered or piña organza barong and a refined Filipiniana dress in soft colors such as champagne, ivory or blush.
Should the ninang wear the same color as the bridesmaids?
No. Nuptials.ph says that in traditional Filipino weddings ninangs should not wear the color motif of the bridesmaids and flower girls, because they are supposed to stand out from the rest of the bridal party.
What do secondary sponsors wear?
Two Nuptials.ph pages differ. One suggests a gown in cream, off-white or near the wedding colors for women and neutral polo shirts with black or dark brown slacks for men. The other suggests a formal blouse and skirt with a shawl, and cream or off-white long-sleeved polo shirts.
What do ring bearers and flower girls wear?
Smaller versions of the adult outfits. Barong World says children in the entourage need scaled-down versions of the same thing, and Storia suggests a mini barong with dark pants for the ring bearer and a mini terno or Filipiniana dress for the flower girl.
How far in advance should we order entourage attire?
Storia advises sharing your color palette and fabric preference with the entourage 4 to 6 months before the wedding. Barong World says to allow two to three months to order for a full entourage.
What is the best barong fabric for a wedding?
Piña is the finest and most expensive, jusi is the classic middle choice, and jusilyn costs less than jusi. Barong World says organza, the cheapest, is typically not the best option for a low-key wedding barong.
