Burgundy and Maroon Wedding Motif: 10 Palettes and Entourage
Thursday, October 22, 2026
Quick answer
Burgundy is a purplish dark red (#800020 on Wikipedia) and maroon is a brownish red (#800000), and suppliers use the names loosely. Pair either with gold, champagne, blush, navy or cream. Give principal sponsors cream or off-white, and keep the dark red for the wedding party and decor.
Burgundy and maroon are the same idea to a couple and two different shades to a tailor. This guide pins the names to hex codes, gives ten dark-red palettes, a per-role table for your entourage with a dark-fabric check for Philippine heat, barong pairings, and a way to show the motif on a digital invitation. You can copy the palettes and the swatch steps as they are.

Burgundy vs maroon vs wine: the hex codes
The two names are close in the numbers. On Wikipedia, burgundy is "a purplish, dark-red color" at #800020. Its maroon page gives maroon as "a brownish red color" at #800000. The two codes differ only in the blue channel (32 of 255). Each page also says similar shades have "overlapping RGB ranges", which is why suppliers use the words loosely.
| Name | Hex | Wikipedia's description | Tell your supplier (our wording) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Burgundy | #800020 | Purplish dark red | "Dark red with a touch of purple" |
| Maroon | #800000 | Brownish red | "Dark red leaning brown, no purple" |
| Wine | #800032 | Dark shade of red and brown, the color of red wine | "A little pinker than burgundy" |
| Claret | #7F1734 | Representation of the average color of Bordeaux wine | "Deep red with a little pink" |
| Dark red | #8B0000 | Listed on Wikipedia's shades of red page | "Clear red, just darker" |
Send suppliers the code plus a physical swatch, because the same dye looks different on satin, chiffon and linen. For this guide, our own example burgundy is #6D1F2F, deeper than #800020. That is the same shade as the "Champagne and burgundy" row in our wedding colors guide.
What a dark red motif suits
Zola, a US wedding site, says burgundy pairs with blush, dusty blue, gold, navy, warm grey, brown and black. It ties the shade to fall and winter, but also says gold can "brighten the otherwise dark shade of burgundy" for summer. The Philippines has no fall or winter, so the table below is our advice, not a rule. For evening and December weddings, our reading is that indoor, candlelit rooms give burgundy the same effect, and burgundy with emerald can look like Christmas colors, so decide that on purpose.
| Setting | Why it fits | Check (our advice) |
|---|---|---|
| Evening reception, ballroom | Deep red reads rich under warm light | Dark fabric can look black in dim rooms |
| Church ceremony, then evening reception | One color across both venues | Look at it in the church's own light |
| Filipiniana, heritage venue | Deep red sits well with gold and piña tones | Hold it beside the actual barong |
| Daytime garden | Works as a small accent against green | Full dark dresses can feel heavy in heat |
| Beach or outdoor midday | Poor fit as the main color | Use ties, ribbons and flowers only |
Two Philippine examples: burgundy and red
Bride and Breakfast, a Philippine wedding blog, has one burgundy feature and one bold-red feature. Neither page says what the principal sponsors wore, so this is thin evidence on roles.
| Wedding | What the feature says |
|---|---|
| Burgundy Filipiniana, 2019 | Titled "An Elegant Filipiniana Wedding with a Deep Burgundy Theme"; bridesmaids in "classic Maria Clara ensembles"; ceremony at St. Benedict's Church |
| Bold red, 2023 | Couple chose "bold red" as their motif; friends and family wore "red dresses and suits"; chapel ceremony in Tagaytay |
The 2019 post's text does not say where the burgundy appeared. The 2023 wedding is red, not burgundy, and its page says friends and family wore red; it does not mention the entourage.
10 burgundy and maroon palettes with hex codes
These combinations and hex codes are our own examples, not a paint brand's. Screens shift color, so brief people with the code and confirm with a fabric swatch. Order is dominant, secondary, accent, neutral. The "Suits" and "Watch out" columns are our advice, not sourced rules.
| Palette | Hex codes | Suits | Watch out (our advice) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Burgundy and gold | #6D1F2F · #C9A86A · #F4EBDD · #FBF8F2 | Evening, Filipiniana | Let gold lead in daylight |
| Burgundy and blush | #6D1F2F · #E8C9C0 · #C9A96A · #FAF6EE | Church, garden dusk | Blush can wash out beside deep red |

| Burgundy and sage | #6D1F2F · #9CAF88 · #D8C3A5 · #F6F0E2 | Garden, rustic | Keep sage the lighter of the two |
| Burgundy and emerald | #6D1F2F · #0F6B4F · #C9A86A · #F6F0E2 | Evening, heritage venue | Can read as holiday red and green |
| Burgundy and charcoal | #6D1F2F · #3A3A3C · #B76E79 · #FAF7F5 | Modern, evening | Dark pair, so light the room well |

If you are still choosing colors, start with our wedding colors guide. For the emerald pairing, see our emerald green wedding motif guide. For softer alternatives, see the sage green wedding motif guide and the dusty blue wedding motif guide, both of which pair well with burgundy.
Who wears what: burgundy by entourage role
Rows follow the groups in Imbitasyon Ko's entourage editor, with its role names. Sources are named per row, and the rest is our suggestion. The last column is our advice about wearing a dark color in a warm venue.
| Role | Burgundy suggestion | Dark-color check (our advice) |
|---|---|---|
| Parents of the Groom, Parents of the Bride | Match the palette without overshadowing the couple (Casa Barong); a neutral or burgundy accent is our suggestion | Pick a breathable fabric |
| Principal Sponsors | Cream or off-white gowns; neutral, subdued barongs or tuxedos (Nuptials.ph) | Light colors help in heat |
| Best Man | Burgundy tie or pocket square, a shade deeper than the groomsmen | Small accent, low heat |
| Maid of Honor | The bridesmaids' burgundy, or a deeper wine | Same fabric as the others |
| Candle Sponsors, Veil Sponsors, Cord Sponsors | Cream, off-white or a quiet blush; secondary sponsors have more freedom (Nuptials.ph) | Light, so no extra heat |
| Groomsmen | Same color family (Casa Barong); burgundy as tie or accent is our suggestion | Dark ties only; no dark barongs |
| Bridesmaids | Burgundy dresses in one shade or fabric (Casa Barong) | Chiffon over satin for daytime |
| Ring Bearer, Coin Bearer, Bible Bearer | A small barong; keep burgundy to one small detail | Children overheat first |
| Flower Girls | Burgundy sash or ribbon on a neutral dress | Same |
Nuptials.ph says that "the ninangs should not wear the color motif of the bridesmaids and flower girls" (primary and secondary sponsors). Casa Barong's outfit guide says parents should look "aligned with the wedding's colour palette without overshadowing the couple." The same guide notes that outdoor and warm climate weddings need fabrics that "feel comfortable." Full rules and fabric guidance are in our entourage attire guide.
Burgundy with a barong or Filipiniana
A barong arrives with its own color. Heritage Barong says piña "exhibits a yellowish or light champagne-gold hue" and that cocoon silk's natural color is off-white. A deep red beside a warm, pale base is a strong contrast, which is why we think it works (our judgement).
| Option | How it works | Our take |
|---|---|---|
| Plain barong, burgundy accents | Burgundy on ties, pocket squares, boutonnieres | Safest for a mixed group |
| Barong with burgundy dresses | Women in burgundy, men in barongs | Cleanest two-tone look |
| Burgundy Filipiniana | A terno or Maria Clara gown in deep red | Test sleeves and fabric weight first |
| Burgundy in decor only | Entourage in cream and gold, red on linens and flowers | Calmest, with the least dark-fabric heat |
Casa Barong says groomsmen can wear "simpler versions in the same colour family" as the groom. For the wider Filipiniana palette, see our Filipiniana wedding theme guide.
Flowers and decor for a dark red motif
Zola suggests choosing "a rich red shade" of roses to match a burgundy theme, adding tall tapered candles and draping burgundy fabric across the ceiling and walls. It adds that pairing burgundy with black makes the reds "pop." We make no claims about what is in stock or how much it costs on your date, so ask your florist.
| Question | What to do | Basis |
|---|---|---|
| Main flower | Roses in a rich red shade | Zola |
| Light the room | Tapered candles; soft glow after sunset | Zola |
| Dark fabric | Draped burgundy fabric on ceiling and walls | Zola |
| Keep it from going flat | Add gold, champagne or ivory in at least one place | Our advice |
| Table linen | Ivory base with burgundy runners | Our advice |
Match fabrics before you match colors, because the same dye reads differently on each.
| Fabric | How dark red reads | Basis |
|---|---|---|
| Satin | Richer and shinier | Our advice |
| Chiffon | Lighter and cooler to wear | Our advice |
| Linen | Duller and more natural | Our advice |
Daytime outdoor heat and timing are covered in our garden wedding guide.
Test a dark red in seven steps
Dark red can look black indoors and bright outdoors. These steps are our advice, not a rule.
- Order a physical swatch of the actual fabric, or borrow a dress.
- Photograph it outdoors at ceremony time, where the wedding party will stand.
- Photograph it inside the ceremony venue with its lights on.
- Photograph it beside the barong swatch and a cream swatch for the ninang.
- If it looks black indoors, go one step brighter or add a warm accent.
- If it feels heavy outdoors, switch to a lighter fabric or use it only as an accent.
- Fix the shade as a hex code and send the same photo to every supplier.
Show the burgundy motif on the invitation
Imbitasyon Ko has one theme built on deep maroon, plus a few that pair well with a dark red palette. Each theme's palette is fixed.
| Theme | Category | Palette note |
|---|---|---|
| Terno Maroon | Filipiniana | Deep maroon #3A1216 with gold #DEB45E; Standard theme, our closest pick |
| Evening Mass | Catholic Elegant | Deep navy with gold; pairs with a burgundy and navy motif |
| Champagne Cathedral | Catholic Elegant | Warm champagne cream with gold; a light match for burgundy |
| Blessed Blush | Catholic Elegant | Crisp white with soft rose accents; pairs with burgundy and blush |
| Garden Blush | Garden Floral | Soft blush pink with a floral touch; Free plan |
You can browse all themes and filter by the Red color family. Terno Maroon is dark, so check it on a phone at full brightness. The page uses the theme, and the motif goes in the editor's Dress Code & Motif section: up to six colors from presets or a custom color. The presets are Sage, Dusty rose, Champagne, Navy, Terracotta and Emerald, so there is no burgundy swatch. Add it with the custom color picker and set #6D1F2F. Whenever you add swatches, the invitation prints "We would be delighted to see you in our motif colors" above them, so do not repeat it in your note.
Say what you want guests to do, because swatches alone do not. These are plain dress code notes for you to adapt. Use the first with swatches; it adds the neutral option rather than repeating the printed line:
Our motif is burgundy, gold and ivory. Please wear it or any soft neutral.
Use the second only if you add no swatches, because with swatches the invitation already asks guests to wear your motif colors:
Our burgundy and gold belong to the wedding party. Please wear another color.
For fuller wording, see our dress code guide, and for choosing among dark and light themes, our invitation theme guide.
Lock the shade before anyone shops
Pick two or three colors, treat the barong's warm off-white as your neutral, give principal sponsors cream rather than burgundy, and fix the shade as a hex code before the entourage buys. Keep full dark dresses for evening, use ties and flowers for daytime, and put the same swatch photo in every supplier's hands.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between burgundy and maroon?
Wikipedia describes burgundy as a purplish dark red (#800020) and maroon as a brownish red (#800000). Both pages say the names overlap with other shades, so brief suppliers with a hex code and a fabric swatch, not the color name.
What colors go with burgundy for a wedding?
Gold, champagne, blush, navy, dusty blue, charcoal and burnt orange all work. Zola lists blush, dusty blue, gold, sunflower, navy, warm grey, brown and black. Our palette table gives hex codes for ten combinations.
Can ninangs wear burgundy if the bridesmaids do?
Nuptials.ph says ninangs should not wear the bridesmaids' and flower girls' color motif and recommends cream or off-white gowns. So with a burgundy motif, give principal sponsor women cream or off-white and keep burgundy for the wedding party.
Does burgundy go with a barong?
In our judgement, yes. Heritage Barong says piña has a yellowish or light champagne-gold hue and cocoon silk's natural color is off-white, so a dark red sits against a warm base. Hold the dress and the barong swatch together before you commit.
Is a burgundy wedding motif too dark for a Philippine daytime wedding?
It can be, since dark fabric reads heavy in bright sun and heat. Our advice: use burgundy as an accent for daytime, as ties, sashes and flowers, and save full burgundy dresses for evening or indoor weddings. Test the fabric at the venue.
What flowers go with a burgundy wedding motif?
Zola suggests roses in a rich red shade to match the theme, tall tapered candles and burgundy fabric draping. Ask your florist what is available on your date, because we cannot say what is in stock or what it costs.
How do I show a burgundy motif on a digital invitation?
On Imbitasyon Ko the Dress Code & Motif section has no burgundy preset, but you can add a custom color such as #6D1F2F, up to six motif colors in all. Terno Maroon is the one theme built on deep maroon.
