Royal Blue and Navy Wedding Motif: 12 Palettes and Entourage
Friday, October 23, 2026
Quick answer
Royal blue is a deep, vivid blue (web color #4169E1, though traditional royal blue is darker), navy is #000080 and midnight blue #191970 on Wikipedia. All three pair with gold, silver, white, blush or champagne. Put them on bridesmaids, groomsmen accents and decor, and give principal sponsors cream or off-white.
Royal blue, navy and midnight blue are three different blues to a tailor, and one "dark blue" to most couples. This guide pins each name to a hex code, gives twelve palettes, a per-role table for your entourage with a heat check for dark fabric, barong pairings, and a way to show the motif on a digital invitation. For paler blues, see our dusty blue wedding motif guide.

Royal blue vs navy vs midnight blue: the hex codes
The names overlap, and even the sources disagree. On Wikipedia's royal blue page, royal blue is "a deep and vivid shade of blue", but "the web color named royal blue is a much brighter shade" than the traditional one. Its Shades of blue page lists the traditional shade at #002366, while the royal blue page itself gives #012169. Navy blue, on its own page, got its name from the dark blue worn by sailors in the Royal Navy since 1748.
| Name | Hex | Source | Tell your supplier (our wording) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Royal blue (web color) | #4169E1 | Wikipedia | "Bright, saturated blue" |
| Royal blue (traditional) | #002366 or #012169 | Wikipedia, two pages | "Deep blue, close to navy" |
| Navy blue | #000080 | Wikipedia | "Dark, pure blue, no gray" |
| Midnight blue | #191970 | Wikipedia | "Navy with a touch of violet" |
| Our royal blue | #2B4FA8 | Our example | "Strong blue, between web and traditional" |
| Imbitasyon Ko Navy preset | #1F2F55 | Our editor | "Softer, grayer navy" |
| Our midnight blue | #101B38 | Our example | "Nearly black, with blue showing in light" |
Send suppliers the code plus a physical swatch, because the same dye looks different on satin, chiffon and velvet. Our palettes below use #2B4FA8 for royal blue, #1F2F55 for navy and #101B38 for midnight.
What a dark blue motif suits
Carlson Craft, a US stationery printer, says navy is a neutral that accents many color schemes, and that for evening weddings with dark bridesmaid dresses it is "less harsh than black." The table is our advice, not a rule.
| Setting | Why it fits | Check (our advice) |
|---|---|---|
| Church, then evening reception | One formal color across both venues | Look at it in the church's own light |
| Hotel ballroom, evening | Dark blue holds up against gold and candlelight | Dark fabric can lose detail in dim rooms |
| Filipiniana, heritage venue | Deep blue beside warm piña and gold | Hold it beside the actual barong |
| Daytime garden | Works as ties, sashes and linen accents | Full dark dresses feel heavy in heat |
| Beach or outdoor midday | Poor fit as the main color | Use ribbons and flowers only |
Real Philippine navy and deep blue weddings
Bride and Breakfast, a Philippine wedding blog, has features that use deep blue. None names a royal blue motif, so the evidence below is for navy and deep blue.
| Feature | What it says |
|---|---|
| Elegant Affair, 2015 | Couple married "with deep shades of blue", away from pastels; ceremony at St. James the Great Parish; Vivere Hotel reception |
| Champagne gold and navy, 2020 | "champagne gold and navy blue accents"; groom in a navy suit; flowers minimal; Ellinwood Malate Church |
| Shades of blue for bridesmaids, 2019 | Its deep blue is "Almost close to black" with "a royal feel", and it "adds boldness to any theme" |
| Royal colors, 2022 | A "royal palette–blue, red, and violet"; church ceremony at Santuario De San Jose |
Three of the four put the dark blue in church weddings. The 2022 page says royal palette, not royal blue, and its text does not say which role wore which color.
12 royal blue, navy and midnight palettes with hex codes
These combinations and hex codes are our own examples, not a paint brand's. Screens shift color, so brief people with the code and confirm with a fabric swatch. Order is dominant, secondary, accent, neutral. The "Suits" and "Watch out" columns are our advice, not sourced rules.
| Palette | Hex codes | Suits | Watch out (our advice) |
|---|---|---|---|

| Royal blue and blush | #2B4FA8 · #E8C9C0 · #C9A96A · #FAF6EE | Garden, daytime | Keep blush light so blue does not dominate |

Who wears what: royal blue and navy by entourage role
Rows follow the groups in Imbitasyon Ko's entourage editor, with its role names. Sources are named per row, and the rest is our suggestion.
| Role | Royal blue or navy suggestion | Basis |
|---|---|---|
| Parents of the Groom, Parents of the Bride | A neutral or a quiet navy accent; do not overshadow the couple | Casa Barong, our suggestion |
| Principal Sponsors | Cream or off-white gowns; neutral, subdued barongs or tuxedos | Nuptials.ph |
| Best Man | Navy or royal blue tie or pocket square, a shade deeper than the groomsmen | Our suggestion |
| Maid of Honor | The bridesmaids' blue, or a deeper blue | Our suggestion |
| Candle Sponsors, Veil Sponsors, Cord Sponsors | Cream, off-white or a quiet blue-gray; secondary sponsors have more freedom | Nuptials.ph, our suggestion |
| Groomsmen | Barong in the same color family; blue as tie or accent | Casa Barong, our suggestion |
| Bridesmaids | Navy or royal blue dresses in one shade or fabric | Casa Barong |
| Ring Bearer, Coin Bearer, Bible Bearer | A small barong; keep blue to one small detail | Our suggestion |
| Flower Girls | Blue sash or ribbon on a neutral dress | Our suggestion |
Nuptials.ph says that "the ninangs should not wear the color motif of the bridesmaids and flower girls" (primary and secondary sponsors). Casa Barong's outfit guide says parents should look "aligned with the wedding's colour palette without overshadowing the couple." Because navy is dark and subdued, a navy tuxedo for a ninong is our reading of Nuptials.ph's "subdued tones", so confirm it with the couple. Full rules and fabric prices are in our entourage attire guide.
| Groom and groomsmen option | What it is | Basis |
|---|---|---|
| Navy suit for the groom | The groom wore one in Bride and Breakfast's 2020 champagne gold and navy wedding | Bride and Breakfast |
| Navy suits, white shirts | Shine pairs them with soft gray or deep burgundy ties as an alternative to black tuxedos | Shine |
| Gray suit, navy tie | Carlson Craft suggests a gray suit, navy tie, navy pocket square and white shirt for semi-formal | Carlson Craft |
| Navy tuxedo or vest | Evening only; a jacket or vest adds heat at a daytime wedding | Our advice |
Navy and royal blue with a barong or Filipiniana
A barong arrives with its own color. Heritage Barong says piña "exhibits a yellowish or light champagne-gold hue". Casa Barong says the most common wedding barong colours are ivory, cream, beige, champagne, light grey and soft neutral tones. Deep blue beside those warm neutrals is a contrast, which is why we think it works (our judgement). We found no Philippine feature showing navy or royal blue with barongs, so swatch it first.
| Option | How it works | Our take |
|---|---|---|
| Plain barong, navy trousers | Casa Barong suggests black, navy, beige or grey dress pants with a modern barong | Easy way to carry navy into the men's look |
| Plain barong, blue accents | Navy or royal blue ties, pocket squares, boutonnieres | Safest for a mixed group |
| Barong with blue dresses | Women in navy or royal blue, men in barongs | Cleanest two-tone look |
| Blue-toned Filipiniana | A terno or Maria Clara gown in navy or royal blue | Test sleeves and fabric weight first |
| Blue only in decor | Entourage in cream and gold, blue on linens and flowers | Calmest, with the least dark-fabric heat |
Casa Barong says groomsmen can wear "simpler versions in the same colour family" as the groom. The Filipiniana wedding theme guide covers the wider palette.
Flowers and decor in royal blue and navy
Shine Wedding Invitations, a US stationery brand, says navy "isn’t a natural flower color", so it suggests ribbons, berries or flowers such as delphiniums, anemones and dark blue thistles. Carlson Craft suggests navy table linens against white china, metallic chargers in bronze or gold, and blue grape hyacinth in clear vases. Polka Dot Wedding, a wedding blog, pairs midnight blue with silver, gold, pearls and "capiz shell", plus dusty miller foliage. Ask your florist what is in stock on your date.
| Question | What to do | Basis |
|---|---|---|
| Blue flowers | Delphinium, anemone, blue grape hyacinth | Shine, Carlson Craft |
| Navy without flowers | Ribbons and berries | Shine |
| White anchors | White hydrangea or roses to keep it bright | Carlson Craft, our advice |
| Table | Navy linen, white plates, gold or bronze chargers | Carlson Craft |
| Sparkle | Pearls, silver, gold or capiz shell | Polka Dot Wedding |
| Foliage | Dusty miller, a gray-green bridge | Polka Dot Wedding |
Match fabrics before you match colors, because the same dye reads differently on each.
| Fabric | How dark blue reads | Basis |
|---|---|---|
| Satin | Richer and shinier | Our advice |
| Velvet | Deepest and heaviest; evening only | Shine, our advice |
| Chiffon | Lighter, cooler to wear | Shine, our advice |
| Linen | Duller and more natural | Our advice |
Shine suggests velvet or satin for a winter wedding and chiffon or silk in warmer months. Heat and timing are covered in our garden wedding guide and beach wedding guide.
Photographing dark blue in church light
Navy can look black indoors, and royal blue can look electric outdoors. Test both. These steps are our advice, not a rule.
- Order a physical swatch of the actual fabric, or borrow a dress.
- Photograph it outdoors at ceremony time, where the wedding party will stand.
- Photograph it inside the ceremony venue with its lights on.
- Photograph it beside the barong swatch and a cream swatch for the ninang.
- If it looks black indoors, go one step brighter or add a warm accent.
- If it looks too bright outdoors, go one step deeper or add white.
- Fix the shade as a hex code and send the same photo to every supplier.
Casa Barong advises avoiding "heavy fabrics, dark colours and overly structured pieces" at beach weddings unless the event is very formal.
Show the royal blue or navy motif on the invitation
Imbitasyon Ko has no theme named royal blue or navy, and each theme's palette is fixed. These are the dark and bright blue themes in the catalog, taken from their own palettes and descriptions.
| Theme | Category | Palette note |
|---|---|---|
| Evening Mass | Catholic Elegant | Deep navy #141F30 with gold #C9A86A; Standard theme, our pick for navy and gold |
| Moonlit Tide | Beach & Destination | Midnight navy #13253A with moonlit blue #A3C8DE |
| Minimal Midnight | Modern Minimal | Midnight navy #10131C, light blue #9FB8D8; clean type |
| Minimal Azure | Modern Minimal | Azure #2F6BB0 on white; the brightest blue, nearest to royal blue |
| Garden Sky | Garden Floral | Sky blue #3D6FA3 on #F0F6FC; lighter than royal blue |
You can browse all themes and filter by the Blue color family. The three dark themes use a dark background, so check them on a phone at full brightness.
- Theme and motif are separate. The page uses the theme. The motif goes in the editor's Dress Code & Motif section, up to six colors from presets or a custom color.
- Only one blue preset. The presets are Sage, Dusty rose, Champagne, Navy, Terracotta and Emerald, so Navy (#1F2F55) is the only blue swatch. For royal blue or midnight, use the custom color picker and set #2B4FA8 or #101B38.
- Do not repeat the printed line. Whenever you add swatches, the invitation prints "We would be delighted to see you in our motif colors" above them.
Say what you want guests to do, because swatches alone do not. These are plain dress code notes for you to adapt. Use the first with swatches; it names your colors in words:
Our motif is navy, gold and ivory. Please wear our colors.
Use the second only if you add no swatches, because with swatches the invitation already asks guests to wear your motif colors:
Our navy and gold belong to the wedding party. Please wear another color.
For fuller wording, see our dress code guide, and for choosing among dark and light themes, our invitation theme guide.
Lock the blue before anyone shops
Fix the shade as a hex code, give principal sponsors cream, and send every supplier the same swatch photo before the entourage buys.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between royal blue, navy and midnight blue?
Wikipedia gives web royal blue as #4169E1, a much brighter shade than traditional royal blue, with navy at #000080 and midnight blue at #191970. Royal blue is the brightest and navy the plainest dark blue. Brief suppliers with a hex code and a fabric swatch, not the name.
What colors go with royal blue for a wedding?
Gold, silver, white, blush and champagne all work. Our palette table gives hex codes for twelve combinations. Pick one metal and one neutral, and let blue lead.
Is navy blue and gold a good wedding motif in the Philippines?
Yes. Bride and Breakfast featured a Manila church wedding in champagne gold and navy blue accents, with the groom in a navy suit. Carlson Craft says navy goes beautifully with copper or gold metallics. Keep the gold in decor and small accents.
Can ninangs wear navy if the bridesmaids do?
Nuptials.ph says ninangs should not wear the color motif of the bridesmaids and flower girls, and recommends cream or off-white gowns. So with a navy motif, give principal sponsor women cream or off-white. A navy tuxedo for a ninong is our reading of "subdued", so confirm it with the couple.
Does navy go with a barong?
In our judgement, yes. Heritage Barong says piña has a yellowish or light champagne-gold hue, and Casa Barong lists ivory, cream, beige and champagne as the common wedding barong colours, so deep blue sits against a warm base. Casa Barong also suggests navy dress pants with a modern barong.
Is navy too dark for a Philippine daytime wedding?
It can be. Casa Barong advises avoiding heavy fabrics and dark colours at beach weddings unless the event is very formal. Our advice: for daytime, use navy as ties, sashes and decor, and save full navy dresses for evening or indoor weddings.
How do I show a royal blue or navy motif on a digital invitation?
On Imbitasyon Ko the Dress Code & Motif section has a Navy preset swatch, #1F2F55, and takes up to six motif colors. For royal blue or midnight blue, add a custom color. Evening Mass, Moonlit Tide and Minimal Midnight are the dark blue themes.
