Despedida de Soltera vs Bridal Shower: Meaning, Hosts, Timing
Thursday, September 3, 2026
Quick answer
A despedida de soltera is a send-off dinner the bride's family hosts, usually 1 to 3 weeks before the wedding, with the groom's family invited. A bridal shower is a gift-and-games party the maid of honor and bridesmaids throw 1 to 3 months before. You can hold both, one or neither.
The despedida de soltera is your family's send-off dinner for you. The bridal shower is your friends' party for you. Different hosts, different guests, different weeks on the calendar. Below: what the name means (and why Google Translate gets it wrong), a side-by-side table, the full pre-wedding calendar, six planning steps and invitation text to copy. Every custom here is attributed to a source you can open. For the groom's side, see our bachelor party guide.

What despedida de soltera means in the Philippines
Nuptials.ph, a Philippine wedding magazine, translates it literally as "farewell of [the] single woman" and warns: "Google Translate will tell you that a despedida de soltera is the same thing as a bachelorette party, but it's not." It argues the despedida is "much closer to the western wedding practice of a rehearsal dinner rather than a bachelorette party." Search results mix the two because the Spanish phrase means something else abroad. Argentina's La Nación (2018), for example, describes a despedida de soltera with risqué games and a stripper, and presents the bridal shower as the tamer alternative. Spanish-language comparisons describe that event, not the Filipino one.
The Philippine meaning is a family dinner. Kasal.com, drawing on Essays on Philippine Culture (Alvina and Sta. Maria, 1987), calls it "the send-off dinner for the daughter of the house by her family close to the wedding date" and "the ritual show of the family's consent to the marriage and bestowal of its blessings."
Bride and Breakfast's despedida Q&A sets it against the earlier family visit: "If the pamamanhikan highlights how the groom officially asks for the bride's hand in marriage, the despedida de soltera honors how the bride's family gives their blessing." Our pamanhikan guide covers that first visit.
Wikipedia traces the bridal shower to the United States. It calls it "a gift-giving party held for a bride-to-be" and says that in the United States "bridal showers started in urban areas in the 1890s".

The guest row is the one couples misjudge. Kasal.com notes that if there has been no earlier occasion, "the despedida may serve as the formal introduction of the two families or clans to each other." A shower cannot do that job.
One wrinkle: Nuptials.ph's own article gives two timings, "a few days before the wedding" in its definition and "one to three weeks before" in its hosting section. The other two sources give one to three weeks.
Where each event falls on your calendar
Bride and Breakfast's 2017 timeline lists eight events. It also says "it's not a rule that you should have all of them."
| Event | When | Who plans it |
|---|---|---|
| Pamanhikan | 1 to 3 weeks after the engagement | Usually the groom's family |
| Engagement party | 1 to 2 months after the engagement | Usually the couple |
| Bridal shower | 1 to 3 months before the wedding | Maid of honor and bridesmaids |
| Bachelor party | 2 to 4 weeks before | Best man and groomsmen |
| Bachelorette party | 2 to 4 weeks before | Maid of honor and bridesmaids |
| Bridesmaids' luncheon | 1 to 3 weeks before | The bride |
| Despedida de soltera | 1 to 3 weeks before | Usually the bride's family |
| Rehearsal dinner | 1 to 7 days before | The couple, or the planner or coordinator |
On order, the sources agree the despedida comes late. Bride and Breakfast's Q&A says it "would usually be the last pre-wedding event right before the big day," and Kasal.com describes it as "capping all the parties and showers honoring the bride-elect." If you also hold a rehearsal dinner, that comes after it. Our wedding planning checklist covers everything else due in those weeks.
Planning a despedida de soltera in six steps
- Confirm who is hosting, in one conversation. Nuptials.ph: "Traditionally, the brides family plans and arranges the despedida de soltera." The host sets the guest list, so settle this before any date is floated.
- Fix the date one to three weeks out, and check it against the rehearsal and your final supplier payments.
- Choose the venue by headcount. Bride and Breakfast: "Where the family hosts this gathering depends on the number of guests."
- Invite both sides. Nuptials.ph: usually "only the bride's and groom's closest family members, but you can also choose to include extended family members and close friends."
- Plan for speeches, not games. Bride and Breakfast: "There aren't any specific practices that are observed, but the program would usually include speeches and toasts from the bride's family." Leave time and seating for older relatives to speak.
- Send a separate invitation to that smaller list, using the text below.
No Philippine source publishes a despedida budget. Our advice: ask each caterer for an all-in price per head that states whether service charge and VAT are included, and see what a Philippine wedding costs if both events share one budget.

These three are our wording, not a traditional formula. Fill in the brackets.
- From the bride's parents, formal:
[Father's Full Name] and [Mother's Full Name] invite you to a despedida de soltera dinner for their daughter [Bride's Full Name], before her wedding to [Groom's Full Name]. [Day], [Month] [Date], [Year], [Time], [Venue Name], [Full Address]. Kindly reply to [Contact Name] at [Mobile Number] by [Date].
- To the groom's family, personal:
Dear [Groom's Parents' Names], we would be so happy to have you and your family at [Bride's First Name]'s despedida de soltera dinner on [Day], [Month] [Date] at [Time], at [Venue or "our home"], [Address]. Please let us know how many will come by [Date].
- Short message to relatives:
You're invited to [Bride's First Name]'s despedida de soltera, a family dinner before her wedding. [Day], [Month] [Date], [Time], [Venue], [City]. Please reply to [Contact Name] by [Date].
Send it apart from the wedding invitation. Imbitasyon Ko is built for the wedding itself: its cover always reads "The Wedding of" above the couple's names, and every event you add shows to everyone who opens it. Since the despedida list is smaller than the wedding list, it does not belong there.
Settle the host first, because that answers the guest list and the budget. Then place the despedida one to three weeks out, build the evening around speeches from both families, and let the bridal shower be the lighter event your friends run on their own schedule. The roles your entourage carries in those same weeks are covered separately.
