Wedding Anniversary Gifts by Year: Traditional and Modern List

Tuesday, October 6, 2026

Quick answer

The best-known themes are paper for the 1st, tin or aluminum for the 10th, silver for the 25th and gold for the 50th. There are two lists: a traditional one by material and a modern one first published by US jewelers in 1937 (clocks for the 1st, diamond jewelry for the 10th). Sources differ on some years.

Anniversary gift lists assign a material to each year of marriage, and there is more than one list. This guide gives the traditional and modern themes for years 1 to 80, shows the years where published lists disagree, then covers gift ideas for each theme, the paper and tin years in detail, a short history of the lists and how to pair a gift with a message.

How we built the lists

We compared seven published sources. The tables below mark which of them back each entry, using these codes.

CodeSourceWhat it is
WPWikipedia, Wedding anniversaryEncyclopedia page; US list and UK list (Pears Cyclopaedia 1978-79)
PBPhotoboxUK photo-gift retailer; traditional list only
HNHistoric NewspapersSeller of original newspapers; says it follows the American lists
AIAnniversaryIdeas.co.ukUK gift site; modern list
WDWedissimoUK wedding blog; traditional, modern, colour and gemstone
CDCelebrant DirectoryWedding-planning directory; history of the lists
JAJewelers of AmericaUS jewelry trade body; gemstone list

Several of these sell related products, so treat their gift ideas as ideas, not endorsements. Our traditional column follows the US list; the UK list is shown where the sources differ.

Traditional and modern anniversary gifts by year

Wikipedia's lists cover years 1 to 15, then every fifth year, so those are the rows below. Years 16 to 29 are in their own table, because the sources disagree there. Unless noted, each row matches across the sources that print it: WP, PB and HN for traditional, HN, AI and WD for modern.

Exceptions to "matches across sources":

  • 6th to 9th: HN prints two options (iron or candy, bronze or pottery, pottery or willow) where WP and PB print one; we show the one they share. CD gives the modern 6th as wood (UK) or candy (US).
  • 7th: WD's modern "brass desk sets" is a wording difference we do not count.
  • 11th: WD says "Jewellery or Accessories" for the modern theme; HN and AI say fashion jewelry.
  • 12th: WP's US list says silk; PB and HN say silk or linen. AI's modern entry is "Pearls or Coloured Gems".
  • 13th: HN and AI say textiles or furs; WD says "Textiles or Faux Fur".
  • 14th: HN says ivory-colored or symbolic gifts, never real ivory; PB says "ivory-inspired".
  • 35th: HN says coral-colored gifts avoid natural coral.
  • 65th to 80th: the traditional entries come from the UK column of WP (65th blue sapphire, 70th platinum, 75th diamond or gold, 80th oak) and from PB, which prints blue sapphire, platinum, diamond and oak. Modern: WD gives sapphire for the 65th and oak for the 80th, AI and WD give platinum for the 70th, AI gives diamonds for the 75th. HN stops at the 60th.

Where the lists disagree

The first split is US versus UK. Wikipedia prints both: the US list is cited to Chicago Public Library librarians, The World Almanac and the World Book Encyclopedia, and the UK list to the 1978-79 edition of Pears Cyclopaedia. The UK guide on Wedissimo agrees with the Pears list for some years and not others.

2ndCottonPaper or cottonCotton
4thFruit and flowersLinen, silkFlowers or fruit
6thIronSugarSugar
7thWool, copperWoolWool
8thBronzeBronze, saltSalt
9thPotteryCopperCopper
12thSilkSilk and fine linenLinen or silk

HN adds that the British tradition swaps the early years, with cotton for the 1st and paper for the 2nd. The 14th is split three ways: ivory (WP's US list), "Elephant" (WD), and opal as an "ethical alternative" (CD). For a couple, pick the theme you both like, or give both materials.

The second split is the years after the 15th. Wikipedia's traditional lists have no entry for 16 to 19, 21 to 24 or 26 to 29. HN prints a "traditional" entry for each of those years, but for 17 to 19, 21 to 23 and 26 to 29 it is the same item that AI and WD list as the modern gift. WD prints only wax for the 16th. Treat this stretch as the least settled.

AI says there is no definitive modern list. Its page continues past the 30th with entries such as timepieces for the 31st and land for the 41st, which we leave out.

The third split is a different kind of list. Jewelers of America publishes what it calls the official jewelry anniversary list, which assigns a piece of jewelry to each year.

YearJA jewelry listYearJA jewelry list
1stGold6thAmethyst
2ndGarnet7thOnyx
3rdPearl8thTourmaline
4thBlue topaz9thLapis lazuli

The JA page continues to the 24th (including watches for the 17th) and then lists the 25th silver, 30th pearl, 35th emerald, 40th ruby, 45th sapphire, 50th gold, 55th alexandrite and 60th diamond. WD's gemstone column matches it for years 1 to 10.

Where the lists came from

  • 1500s: silver (25 years) and gold (50 years) are documented in Germanic countries (WP).
  • 1858: an almanac recommends paper for the 1st, wood for the 5th and tin for the 10th (WP).
  • Early 1900s: suggested gifts include straw for the 2nd, candy for the 3rd, leather for the 4th, flowers for the 7th, linen for the 12th, crystal for the 15th and china for the 20th (WP).
  • 1922: Emily Post's etiquette guide recognised only eight anniversaries (1st, 5th, 10th, 15th, 20th, 25th, 50th, 60th), per a secondary source (CD).
  • 1937: a US jewelers' association issues a longer list. WP says it gives a gift for every year to the 20th, AI says to the 50th (WP, AI, CD).

So the "modern" list is almost 90 years old, and CD says most modern lists were created with commercial interests in mind. That is a good reason to treat every list as a suggestion.

Milestone years

Wikipedia says special celebrations and gifts are often given for milestones such as the 25th, 40th, 50th, 60th and 70th, and that some have names: silver, ruby, gold, diamond and platinum. It also says couples may choose to renew their vows at these milestones; see our renewal of vows guide for the Philippines.

We found no source that ranks which anniversaries Filipino couples celebrate most, so we do not claim one. For the 25th, our silver anniversary celebration guide covers who hosts, the guest list and a sample program.

Gift ideas by year

Ideas come from the sources (codes as above), with a lower-cost version we suggest. We quote no prices, because none of the sources gives a figure we could verify.

Paper (1st) anniversary gifts

HN says paper represents a blank page: the first chapter is written and the rest is still to come. Remember that the UK Pears list puts cotton first and paper second.

Pairing a gift with a message

A gift on a theme works better with a few written lines, and a paper or leather gift makes a natural place to put them: a note inside the journal, a letter tucked into the frame. Our wedding anniversary messages guide has short lines for husbands, wives, couples and milestone years that you can adapt.

Choosing quickly

Pick the list first: traditional if you like a gift with a symbolic material, modern if you prefer practical gifts. For a year the sources disagree on, give either option or both. Where there is no entry for the year, skip the theme and choose a gift the couple will use. Wedissimo's own advice is that there are no hard and fast rules in gift choices.

Frequently asked questions

What are the wedding anniversary gifts by year?

The main table in this guide lists years 1 to 15, then every fifth year to the 80th, with a traditional and a modern theme for each. Examples: paper for the 1st, wood for the 5th, tin or aluminum for the 10th, silver for the 25th, gold for the 50th.

What is the 10th anniversary gift?

Tin or aluminum is the traditional theme. The modern list gives diamond jewelry. Photobox suggests a personalised tin keepsake box or aluminium wall art, and Historic Newspapers suggests a tin keepsake box filled with photographs and letters.

Is the 1st anniversary paper or cotton?

The US lists say paper for the 1st and cotton for the 2nd. The UK list Wikipedia cites from Pears Cyclopaedia (1978-79) says cotton or paper for the 1st and paper or cotton for the 2nd, so the order depends on which list you follow.

What is the difference between traditional and modern anniversary gifts?

The traditional list is organized by material, such as paper, cotton, leather and wood. The modern list was published in 1937 by the American National Retail Jeweler Association and swaps in items such as clocks, china, appliances and watches for many years.

Why is the first anniversary paper?

Wikipedia says an 1858 almanac already recommended paper for the 1st, wood for the 5th and tin for the 10th. Historic Newspapers says paper represents a blank page, with the first chapter of the marriage written and the rest still to come.

Do you have to follow the anniversary gift list?

No. Wedissimo says there are no hard and fast rules in gift choices and suggests treating the traditions as inspiration. Use a theme as a starting point, or only the milestone years.
