Wedding Vows Examples: 45 Sample Personal Vows to Copy
Wednesday, September 2, 2026
Quick answer
Good personal vows run 30 seconds to three minutes: one specific memory, what it taught you, three concrete promises and a short close. In a Catholic rite in the Philippines you cannot replace the consent formula, but Church leaders have said couples may read personal vows after the rite or at the reception.
Sample wedding vows are easy to find. Knowing whether you can say them at your own ceremony is the part guides skip. If you are marrying in a Catholic church in the Philippines, the words you write may not be sayable at the altar, and learning that three weeks out is a bad afternoon.
This page starts with that rule, then gives a short template and 45 sample vows in seven styles. Every sample is a finished text you can read as it stands, with brackets for the details only you know.

Where personal wedding vows are allowed in the Philippines
In January 2016 the president of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines, Archbishop Socrates Villegas, said that the Rite of Marriage gives couples no option to express their love in their own words. Reported by Philstar, he said personal vows "inserted within the wedding liturgy must not be allowed". He pointed couples who want to speak publicly to the reception instead.
Days later SunStar reported Cebu Archbishop Jose Palma naming a slot: after the formal marriage rites, particularly after the post-communion prayer. The same report has Villegas saying couples can read personalised vows after the Mass or at the reception. So the line is not church versus reception. It is inside the rite versus after it, and the after-slot is your priest's call.
Dioceses can be stricter. A copy of the Cebu Archdiocese guidelines (effective Easter 2007), republished on a couple's wedding website, bars couples from composing their own vows and from rewording the formula. It is one diocese's phrasing, so treat it as a warning to ask, not as your parish's rule.
Civil weddings work differently. Article 6 of the Family Code says "No prescribed form or religious rite" is required, but the couple must declare before the solemnizing officer and two witnesses that they take each other as husband and wife. That declaration is the legal minimum, and nothing there stops you adding your own words around it.
| Where | Your own wording | What stays fixed |
|---|---|---|
| Inside the Catholic Rite of Marriage | Not allowed (CBCP, 2016) | The consent formula: use the parish text as printed |
| After the rite, at the post-communion prayer | A bishop has said yes; your priest decides | The rite before it |
| Catholic reception | Allowed | Nothing |
| Civil ceremony | Nothing in Article 6 stops you adding your own words | The Article 6 declaration and two witnesses |
| Other Christian or non-Catholic rite | Ask the officiant | Set by that church |
Nuptials.ph adds that for a church wedding with customized vows you may need the priest to pre-approve them. Ask early, in writing. The consent words of a Catholic wedding are fixed by the Church, so do not invent or reword them; your parish gives you the approved text. If you are renewing promises rather than marrying, see renewal of vows in the Philippines.
How long personal vows should be
Zola puts vows between 30 seconds and three minutes, and notes they feel longer in front of an audience. Our own planning estimate is about 130 spoken words a minute, so:
| Length | Spoken time (estimate) | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| 60 to 100 words | 30 to 45 seconds | Short vows, or the reception line after a fixed rite |
| 200 to 300 words | 90 seconds to 2.5 minutes | The usual personal vow |
| 390 words | About 3 minutes | The ceiling; check with your partner |
Nuptials.ph advises having your vows written up to three weeks before the wedding. Set that finish date and read the draft aloud once with a timer, because nerves slow most people down.
A fill-in template for your own vows
Four moves, in this order: one specific moment, what it taught you, three concrete promises, one short close. Concrete means someone could tell whether you kept it.
The first time I knew, we were [specific scene].
That was when I understood that [one sentence about what you learned].
So I promise to [ordinary-day promise], even when [obstacle].
When things go wrong, I will [hard-day promise].
I will keep [something only you two say or do], because [reason].
[Their name], I choose you.
Sample vows copied off a list read like sample vows, so use the ones below as material: keep the structure, swap the details.
Short wedding vows examples
For a reception mic or a tight program. Each one is under 30 words.
I choose you today, and I will choose you on the boring Tuesdays too. I promise to be honest, to be kind, and to come home to you.
You made ordinary days feel like a plan worth keeping. I promise to keep planning them with you.
I promise to listen first, to answer gently, and to say sorry quickly. I am yours, [Name], for all of it.
You are my favourite person to sit in silence with. I promise to keep sitting next to you.
I vow to laugh with you, to argue fairly, and to never let a day end without a goodnight.
Today I give you my time, my trust and my honesty. I promise to take care of all three.
I promise to be your safe place, your biggest fan, and the first one to say yes to your next crazy idea.
[Name], I did not know what home felt like until you. I promise to build one with you.
I will hold your hand in traffic, in hospitals, in airports and on the dance floor. Wherever we go, we go together.
I promise you effort on the good days and patience on the hard ones. It is all I have, and all I want to give.
Romantic sample wedding vows
Longer, built on the four moves. Replace the scene in each with your own.
The first time I knew, we were stuck at [place] waiting out the rain, and you were laughing about it. That was when I understood that love is who you want beside you when the plan falls apart. So I promise to stay calm when plans change, to tell you the truth even when it is awkward, and to make room for your dreams next to mine. [Name], I choose you.
I used to think love arrived like a big scene. With you it arrived as a hundred small ones: your text when I landed, the last bite you saved for me, the way you learned how I take my coffee. I promise to keep noticing you like that for the rest of our lives.
You taught me that being loved is quiet and steady. I promise to be steady for you: to show up when I say I will, to remember what matters to you, and to be your home wherever we live.
I have watched you be brave for other people for years. Today I promise to be the person you can be tired around. You never have to perform for me.
Before you, I planned for a life. With you, I want to live one. I promise to stay curious about you, to keep dating you after the wedding, and to never stop saying thank you.
Of all the places I could be today, I am happiest here, next to you, in front of the people who raised us and cheered for us. I promise to honour them by taking care of us.
I love who you are and who you are becoming. I promise to cheer for every version of you, and to be patient while you find the next one.
You held my family's stories as carefully as your own. I promise to do the same for yours, and to keep a table where everyone we love always has a seat.
Funny wedding vows examples
Keep the joke to one or two lines and end on something sincere.
I promise to let you have the aircon remote for at least half of every year, to never hide your snacks, and to love you through every "almost there" that really means "I have not left yet."
I promise to say "let's go home" before it is too late, and to act surprised when you say it first.
I promise to share my food, except the last piece of anything, which we will settle by rock, paper, scissors.
I promise to pretend I have not heard your alarm the fourth time it rings, and to laugh when you pretend you never set it.
I promise to never say "as I told you" out loud. I will only think it, loudly, and then hold your hand anyway.
I vow to be your GPS when you are lost, your navigator when you insist you are not, and your co-passenger when we finally arrive at the wrong place together.
I promise to laugh at your jokes, especially the ones only I understand. I promise to keep understanding them.
Long-distance and OFW love story vows
For couples who spent years apart because one of you worked overseas (an OFW, or overseas Filipino worker), on ship rotations or across time zones.
We have loved each other across time zones, dropped calls and bad signal. I promise that from today the only distance between us will be the length of a couch.
For [number] years, home was a screen and a countdown. Today the countdown is over. I promise to be present in every ordinary hour we get to share.
You waited through every contract, every goodbye at the airport and every birthday I missed. I promise to spend the rest of my birthdays with you.
Love, for us, has been a schedule and a leap of faith. I promise to keep showing up, in person now, with the same effort we put into every video call.
Whatever country I work in, my home address will always be wherever you are.
Our years apart taught me that missing you was the proof, not the problem. I promise you a life where we do not have to miss each other so much.
Vows for a second marriage or a blended family
If you want the story of a first marriage handled with care, read second marriage invitation wording as well.
We each arrived with a history and a heart that has been tested. I promise to honour what came before and to give you all of my present.
I did not expect to find you, and I am so glad I did. I promise to be patient with old fears and generous with new hopes.
[Child's name], I am not here to replace anyone. I promise to love you, to listen to you, and to be a steady grown-up in your corner.
Thank you for trusting me with your family. I promise to treat your children as the gift they are, and to build our home at the pace that fits everyone.
We are older and wiser, and I do not need grand promises. I promise small daily ones: your coffee, my honesty, our evenings together.
I take the love we have found and promise to protect it, and to keep our home a peaceful place for everyone who lives in it.
Faith-based personal vows (not rite text)
These are personal promises that mention faith. They are not a substitute for the Church's wording, so use them at the reception or after the rite, as agreed with your priest or officiant.
I thank God for bringing us together. I promise to pray for you, to pray with you, and to put our marriage in His hands when it is too heavy for ours.
With God as my strength, I promise to be faithful to you, to speak truthfully, and to forgive quickly.
I believe God writes love stories with patient hands. I promise to keep writing ours with prayer and honesty.
I promise to keep our home a place of grace: quick to forgive, slow to anger, and always open to those who need us.
Thank you, Lord, for [Name]. I promise to honour them, to serve them, and to love them for the rest of my life.
I promise to be the first to say sorry, the first to say thank you, and the first to say a prayer when we are struggling.
Vows for a civil wedding
Say the Article 6 declaration first, as the solemnizing officer directs, then add your own words. The civil versus church wedding comparison shows what else differs.
Before our families and friends, I promise to be your partner in work, in rest, and in every plan in between.
I promise to keep telling you the truth, to share the load at home, and to always assume the best of you.
I promise to support your goals like they were mine, to celebrate every win with you, and to hold your hand through every loss.
Thank you for marrying me today. I promise to keep earning the yes you gave me.
Twenty promises to mix and match
Pick three, make each one specific to the two of you, and drop the rest.
I promise to tell you the truth, kindly.
I promise to say sorry first when I am wrong.
I promise to keep our finances an open conversation.
I promise to share the housework without being asked.
I promise to protect your rest as much as mine.
I promise to call when I will be late.
I promise to celebrate your wins louder than my own.
I promise to keep learning how you like to be comforted.
I promise to put my phone down when you are talking.
I promise to keep visiting the places that mattered to us.
I promise to be kind to your family and patient with mine.
I promise to make you laugh on the worst days.
I promise to keep saying thank you for small things.
I promise to plan time just for the two of us.
I promise to grow with you, not just grow older next to you.
I promise to face every big decision as a team.
I promise to speak about you with respect when you are not there.
I promise to remember that we are on the same side.
I promise to keep our home a place we both want to come back to.
I promise to choose you again on the days it is hard.
What to cut, and where to say them if the answer is no
- News your partner has not heard, unless it is a promise. A wedding is a bad venue for surprises.
- Inside jokes that need thirty seconds of setup.
- Thanks to your parents, principal sponsors and entourage. Save them for the reception program.
- Anything worded like liturgy. A line that sounds like the rite competes with it, and loses.
If the parish says no, decide the slot before the program is locked. The minutes are our planning estimates, not published figures.
| Slot | What it costs | What to arrange |
|---|---|---|
| After the rite, if your priest agrees | 3 to 5 minutes | Ask for the post-communion slot by name |
| Right after the couple's entrance at the reception | 3 to 5 minutes | Emcee cue and a microphone that is already on |
| Before the first dance | 3 to 5 minutes | Coordinator holds the music cue until you finish |
| Printed in the program booklet | No stage time | Final wording by the printer's deadline |
Add the slot to the reception program timeline and the emcee's script, since an emcee who does not know the segment exists will talk over it. If you also give a speech, the bride and groom speech guide covers the other spoken moment of the day, and the program booklet contents page lists what else shares the printed page.
To see where the consent sits in the Catholic order, read the ceremony order. If you want guests to read your story beforehand rather than hear it, the Our Story section of your Imbitasyon Ko invitation (Standard and Premium plans) holds titled moments, which suits what would have been your first paragraph.
The order that saves the most work: ask the parish or officiant first, including about the post-communion slot, set a finish date three weeks before the wedding, draft 200 to 300 words with the template above, and book the slot you were given in the same week you finish.
Frequently asked questions
What are some examples of wedding vows?
This page gives 45 sample vows grouped by style: short, romantic, funny, long-distance, second marriage, faith-based and civil ceremony. Each one is a finished text with brackets for names and details you replace.
Can you write your own vows at a Catholic wedding in the Philippines?
Not inside the rite. In 2016 the CBCP president said personal vows must not be inserted into the wedding liturgy. Archbishop Palma named the slot after the post-communion prayer, and Archbishop Villegas said couples can read them after the Mass or at the reception, so ask your priest.
How long should personal wedding vows be?
Zola advises between 30 seconds and three minutes. At a speaking pace of about 130 words a minute, which is our estimate, three minutes is about 390 words, and 200 to 300 words is a comfortable target.
Can we say personal vows at a civil wedding?
Yes, in addition to the required declaration. Article 6 of the Family Code requires the couple to declare before the solemnizing officer and two witnesses that they take each other as husband and wife, and it says no prescribed form is required.
When should you start writing your wedding vows?
Nuptials.ph advises having them written up to three weeks before the wedding. Read the draft aloud with a timer before then, because nerves slow most people down.
What should you leave out of your wedding vows?
Leave out news your partner has not heard, inside jokes that need setup, thanks to parents and sponsors, and anything worded like liturgy. Thanks belong in the reception program.
