How to Reply to Wedding Congratulations: 40 Messages to Copy

Wednesday, July 8, 2026

Quick answer

Thank the person, say what their message meant to you, and keep your reply as short as theirs. A line in chat or a spoken thank you is enough for most people. Answer the heartfelt messages personally, and use one group thank-you for a flood of comments.

You just announced your engagement or your wedding, and the messages are coming in. This page is for the person being congratulated. It gives you a short formula and 40 messages, sorted by who wrote and where: in person, family, friends, coworkers, social media comments, gifts and late replies.

If you are the one writing the congratulations, see wedding wishes and card messages instead.

The reply formula

Paperlust, a stationer, gives a three-part formula for wedding thank-you cards: name the specific gift or gesture, connect it to your life, and close with warmth. It is written for cards, and it works for a chat reply too. Our advice is to use it with two adjustments: match the length to where you are replying, using the table below, and match the tone of the message you are answering. A joking message can get a joking reply, and a formal note deserves a formal one.

WhereLengthNote
In person or on a callOne sentenceSay it, and mean it
Chat (Messenger, Viber, text)One or two sentencesUse their name
A comment on your postA lineVary the wording slightly
A card or long messageThree to five sentencesPaperlust's length for cards

Instead of a bare thank you, say what the message did: it made your day, or it came at the right moment. You do not owe every comment a paragraph. Reply to the heartfelt ones personally and treat the rest in one group thank-you, since a warm group reply beats a rushed copy-pasted one.

What to say out loud

You may hear "congratulations" in person at the church door, on a call or at the reception. These fit in one breath.

At the church or reception

Thank you so much for being here. It means the world to us.

On a phone call

Thank you! It still feels unreal. We will send you the details soon.

A friend hugs you first

Thank you. I am so glad you are part of this.

Someone who helped plan it

We could not have done this without you. Thank you.

Someone you barely know

Thank you, we appreciate you thinking of us.

Replying to family

Family messages are the most personal, so name what they did for you.

Thank you so much, Aunt [Name]. Your message really touched us. We cannot wait to celebrate with you and the whole family.
Thank you, Uncle [Name]. Having your blessing means a lot to us, and we are grateful for everything you have done. See you soon!
Thank you, Grandma. Your good wishes mean everything to us. We love you and cannot wait to see you.
Thank you, [Name]. You have been with us from the beginning, and this message made our day.

Replying to close friends

Loosen up. Warmth and humor both work.

Thank you! Honestly, we still cannot believe it is happening. We need to celebrate soon, and you had better be there.
Thank you so much. You have been there through everything, so this message means more than you know. We love you.
Thank you! You knew about this before anyone else, so of course you get first hug.
Thank you for always being in our corner. Save the date, because you are on the list.

Replying to coworkers and acquaintances

Warm but slightly measured.

Thank you so much for the kind words. It has been an exciting time, and messages like yours make it more special.
Thank you, that is very kind of you. We are grateful for all the well-wishes.
Thank you! It has been a busy and happy time, and your good wishes mean a lot.

The tricky ones

Some replies need a little more care.

They ask when the wedding is or hint at an invitation

Thank you! We are still finalizing the list and the details. We will share news when we can, and we are grateful for your good wishes.
Thank you so much! We have not set the date yet, and I will tell you as soon as we do.

They ask about the wedding and you are not inviting them

Thank you for your kind words. We are keeping the guest list very small, and it means a lot that you are happy for us.

Our advice is to keep the reply short and warm, not to explain the list, and not to promise an invitation you have not decided on. Our guide to what "invitation only" means shows how guests read it.

Engagement news

Thank you! We are still floating on air. We will share more when we have the date.
Thank you so much for the love. We are so excited, and it means a lot to hear it from you.

Voice notes, work chats and old friends

A few situations that fall between the groups above.

A voice note

I played your voice note twice, and it made me smile both times. Thank you for taking the time to record it.

A work group chat

Thank you, everyone, for the kind wishes in this chat. It is going to be a happy few months, and I will share photos when it is all done.

Someone who says early that they cannot come

Thank you, and I understand completely. It means a lot that you wrote, and I will send you photos of the day.

A friend you have not heard from in years

It has been so long, and I did not expect to hear from you, but I am so glad I did. Thank you for the kind words.

Replying to social media comments

You do not need a unique reply for every comment. Vary a few short phrases so they do not look copy-pasted, and reply individually to the first several. Keep anything private for a direct message.

Anyone

Thank you so much!

A friend

Thank you! We really appreciate the love.

A relative

Aww, thank you! This made our day.

A guest you want to see

Thank you! We would love to have you there, and details are coming soon.

A coworker

Thank you! Hope we can catch up soon.

An old classmate

Thank you! It has been too long. Hope you are well.

A tag in a photo

Thank you for sharing this! We love it.

A comment full of emojis

We love you too. Thank you!

For everyone else, leave one group reply on the post.

Thank you all for the kind words and warm wishes. We have read every one, and we are so grateful. It truly means the world to us.

When "details coming soon" turns real, when to send wedding invitations gives the timing.

Replying to longer, heartfelt messages

A long message, a card or a voice note deserves a reply of similar effort.

Thank you so much for your beautiful message. We read it together, and it brought tears to our eyes. We feel so lucky to have you in our lives.
Thank you for your note. We will keep it. Your words gave us so much joy, and we cannot wait to celebrate this new chapter with you.
Your message was the first thing I read this morning, and it made me cry in the best way. Thank you for being such a good friend to us both.

When a gift comes with the congratulations

Paperlust says to mention what you will use a money gift for rather than the amount. That applies to a reply too. Our GCash wedding gift etiquette shows what a transfer does and does not tell you, and the full post-wedding notes are in wedding thank you messages.

Thank you for the gift and the lovely message. We are putting it toward our first home together, and we will think of you every time.
We just saw your transfer and your note. Thank you so much, we are so grateful.
The gift arrived today and we opened it right away. Thank you for thinking of us.

Late replies

A late thank you still lands. Skip the long apology.

I am sorry it took me a few days. Your message meant a lot, and I wanted to answer it properly. Thank you.
Thank you for your wishes! Life got busy after the wedding, but I read your message and I am so glad you wrote.

Wishes left on your invitation page

If your invitation is an Imbitasyon Ko link, guests can send a wish under the "Wishes & Prayers" heading with the Send Wish button. Each wish is up to 500 characters. The invitation page shows the latest 30 wishes to anyone with the link, and your RSVP page lists the latest 200 under the same name. There is no reply button, so thank people in chat or in one message. Our wedding thank you messages has wording that quotes a phrase from each wish.

A few reminders

  • A day or two is fine. Our advice: reply when you can, not instantly, especially in a busy season.
  • Personal for the personal. People who wrote something specific will notice a reply that answers it.
  • Sound like you. Sincerity reads better than polish.

After the wedding, the job changes shape. See wedding thank you messages for the list, the deadline and the wording.

Frequently asked questions

How do you reply to wedding congratulations?

Thank the person by name and say what their message meant to you. Paperlust's thank-you formula, written for cards, is to name the specific gesture, connect it to your life and close with warmth. Keep a chat reply to one or two sentences.

What can I say instead of just thank you for congratulations?

Say what their message did: it made your day, it came at the right moment, or you are glad they are part of it. Then look ahead, such as we cannot wait to celebrate with you. The messages on this page are grouped by who wrote to you.

What should I say when many people congratulate me?

Reply personally to the first few and to anyone who wrote something specific, then post one group thank-you for the rest. Our advice is that a warm group reply beats a rushed copy-pasted one.

How do I respond to congratulations on social media?

Use a short thank you on each comment and vary the wording a little. Keep anything private for a direct message, and add one group thank-you on the post.

How do I reply to a late congratulations message?

Reply anyway and thank them for the thought. A late thank you still lands. Our advice is to skip a long apology and add a line that you are glad they wrote.

What do I say when someone congratulates me but I did not invite them?

Thank them warmly and stop there. Do not promise an invitation you have not decided on, and if they ask about it, say the guest list is small and you are grateful for their good wishes.

Can guests leave a wish on a digital wedding invitation, and can you reply?

On an Imbitasyon Ko invitation guests can send a wish of up to 500 characters, and it appears in a list on the page. The couple reads them on their RSVP page. There is no reply button, so answer by chat or with one group thank-you.
