Wedding Cake Flavors and Cake Tasting in the Philippines

Friday, October 16, 2026

Quick answer

Choose one to three flavors that suit your guests and venue, then book a cake tasting before you pay a deposit. Philippine bakeries list ube, mango, pandan, caramel and mocha cakes beside classics such as red velvet and chocolate. Ask each baker whether a flavor is offered for a tiered cake.

Choosing wedding cake flavors comes down to your guests, your venue's heat and how many tiers you need. This guide gives a table of flavors that named Philippine bakeries list, a table of classics, a heat checklist, and a step-by-step plan for booking a cake tasting.

What you'll learn: which flavors to ask about, how to sample them, what to ask the baker, when to order, and how the cake fits in the program.

These are cakes on each bakery's regular menu, not confirmed wedding tiers. Ask the baker whether a flavor can be made for a tiered or custom wedding cake.

Dylan Patisserie's wedding cakes page says its wedding cakes are handmade to personalized specifications. Its Gourmet Mixed Cake puts four flavors in one cake, including ube, which suits a tasting-style sampler. We did not find buko pandan on a named bakery's page, so we left it out.

Classic and trending flavors to compare

These come from Zola's flavor guide (updated February 2024), a US source. Zola calls vanilla, chocolate, yellow cake and red velvet the classics of the last 60 years, and groups the rest as up-and-comers and mavericks.

FlavorZola groupZola's note
VanillaClassicCrowd-pleaser; pairs with chocolate mousse, coconut, strawberry, passion fruit, lemon curd
Yellow cakeClassicUses whole eggs; plays well with chocolate buttercream
LemonUp-and-comerCalled ideal for warm-weather weddings
Spice cakeUp-and-comerCarrot cake is the classic example
AlmondUp-and-comerDenser, moist; common in gluten-free cakes
Pink champagneUp-and-comerVanilla cake infused with champagne
FunfettiUp-and-comerSprinkle cake; berry and cream cheese pairings
CoconutMaverickZola's pairings include pineapple, kiwi and mango
Coffee and creamMaverickPairs with toffee, hazelnut, chocolate, caramel

Chocolate and red velvet, Zola's other classics, appear in the table above. Easy Weddings quotes a cake expert who suggests choosing two flavors that differ, such as one rich and one light, and checking with the venue or caterer so guests are not served chocolate dessert and then chocolate cake. For the dessert course, see our reception menu guide.

Heat and outdoor venues

An NPR report (September 2018) quotes a Los Angeles baker, so treat it as US advice. It says heat can melt exterior decorations or undermine structure, and a cake may sit up to six hours before it is cut.

StepWhat the baker says
ShadeWork with the planner so the cake is shielded from direct sun
TimingDelivery is timed close to guest arrival
Display tiersReal base, foam tiers covered in buttercream or fondant; guests get slices from a kitchen cake

The same report says a faux cake can cost more than the real one. We found no Philippine source ranking fondant against buttercream in heat, so ask your baker what they have used at similar venues. Some Goldilocks product pages, such as Mango Dream and Classic Sansrival, list a storage condition, so ask your baker for the same line. If your venue is a garden or beach, see our garden wedding guide and beach wedding guide.

How to book a cake tasting

Pointers below combine Paperlust's tasting guide (a US-audience site) and Style Me Pretty's questions (US). Neither is a Philippine norm. We found no published Philippine tasting fees, so fees vary and you should ask.

  1. Contact the baker with your date, guest count and venue. Dylan Patisserie's wedding page lists Viber and WhatsApp.
  2. Ask whether a tasting is offered, if there is a fee, whether the fee is credited to your order (Paperlust says some bakeries do), and how many people may come.
  3. Expect about one to two hours and three to six combinations, says Paperlust. Ask whether you can mix and match flavors and fillings.
  4. Bring cake photos, your colors, venue details, guest count and budget.
  5. Eat lightly first, bring the person who shares the decision, and write notes after each sample.
  6. Leave with a written quote, then compare two or three bakers.

When to order and what to confirm

SourceTiming it gives
Style Me Pretty (US)Order the cake six to eight months before the wedding
Our vendor guide, Nuptials.ph countdownBook the cake vendor about seven months before
Paperlust (US-audience site)Book a tasting six to nine months out; busy bakers can fill by four to six months

Put the date, flavors per tier, size, design, delivery time, deposit and balance dates, and the cancellation policy in writing. Our planning checklist has the cake tasting and order as separate tasks.

Cake cutting in the program

Programs differ on where the cake goes. Our reception program timeline cites Bride and Breakfast, which says the cake cutting can be before or after the meal, and Kasal.com, which puts it after dinner. Tell your baker, caterer and photographer the slot, and who cuts the slices for guests.

Pick your flavors

Choose a safe crowd-pleaser, add one Philippine flavor you love, and taste both before paying a deposit. Ask each baker which flavors they have made for tiered cakes, how the cake will hold up at your venue, and get the quote in writing.

Frequently asked questions

What are the best wedding cake flavors?

There is no single best flavor. Zola names vanilla, chocolate, yellow cake and red velvet as the classics of the last 60 years. Philippine bakeries also list ube, mango, pandan, caramel and mocha cakes. Pick what you and your guests enjoy most.

What is a wedding cake tasting?

It is an appointment where you sample flavor, filling and frosting combinations and meet the baker. Paperlust, a stationery site writing for a US audience, says most last one to two hours and cover three to six combinations.

Do you pay for a wedding cake tasting?

It depends on the baker. Paperlust says some bakeries offer tastings free while others charge a fee that is often credited toward your order. We found no published Philippine tasting fees, so ask about the fee and whether it is credited.

How many cake flavors should a wedding cake have?

One to three. Easy Weddings quotes a cake expert who says that if you choose two flavors, make them different, for example a rich chocolate and a lighter fruity one.

How far ahead should you order a wedding cake?

Style Me Pretty, a US wedding site, says to order six to eight months ahead. Our vendor guide, using a Nuptials.ph countdown, puts the cake vendor at seven months. Confirm your baker's own deadline.

Will a wedding cake melt at an outdoor venue?

Heat can melt decorations and weaken structure, says a 2018 NPR report with a US baker. She says to shield the cake from direct sun, shorten its time out, or use display tiers with slices from a kitchen cake.
