Small Church Wedding Philippines: 50 Guests, Seats and Costs

Tuesday, September 8, 2026

Quick answer

A 50-guest church wedding works, but in our example rosters the entourage takes 22 to 32 of the 50 seats, canon law limits which church you may book, and some costs do not fall with the guest count. Settle the entourage first, ask your own parish before you book a chapel, and get seat counts in writing.

Fifty is a number couples pick because it sounds manageable. It is a different design problem, not a small version of a big wedding. Three things bite at 50 that never do at 200: the entourage spends much of the list before a friend is invited, the church you may book is not simply the prettiest one you found, and your cost per guest can go up. This page covers those three, the room, and how to confirm a list this small. The documents and deadlines are in our church wedding requirements guide.

Your entourage spends the list first

Our view: the people standing at the front also take seats, so count them inside the 50, and ask your parish how it counts. Here is one wedding rostered two ways, using the role names on an Imbitasyon Ko invitation. The couple is excluded from both totals.

Eighteen seats has to cover both extended families and every friend. Run the arithmetic before promising anyone a role, and settle the entourage before the guest list. The easiest row to trim is the bridal party. Another lever: Nuptials.ph says that if you have no one in mind for secondary sponsors, your groomsmen, bridesmaids, Maid of Honor and Best Man "can certainly do double duty". Each person who doubles saves a seat; check that your parish agrees. Our secondary sponsors guide covers the three rites.

How many principal sponsors?

There is no single national number, so the sources disagree:

SourceWhat it says
Nuptials.ph, principal sponsors FAQ (May 2020)"For small weddings, we suggest having two to four pairs"; for larger ones "a maximum of six to eight pairs"
Manila Cathedral FAQA maximum of eight pairs, to keep to the time for the ceremony and photos
Canon 1108 §1 (Code of Canon Law)Validity needs an assisting priest or deacon with authority, and two witnesses

Canon 1108 §1 says only those marriages are valid which are contracted "before the local ordinary, pastor, or a priest or deacon delegated by either of them, who assist, and before two witnesses". That is a validity rule about the assisting priest and two witnesses, not a count of ninongs and ninangs. How many sponsors you name is custom and family, which is why it is negotiable and uncomfortable. Ask your parish for its cap first. Our principal sponsors guide has the invitation wording once names are fixed, and the free entourage list maker keeps the count visible.

Ask your own parish before you fall for a chapel

If you are browsing chapels, check the rule first. The Code of Canon Law sets three checks:

QuestionCanonWhat it says
Which parish?1115A parish where either of you has "a domicile, quasidomicile, or month long residence"; elsewhere needs the proper ordinary's or pastor's permission
Which building?1118 §1The parish church is the default; another church or oratory needs "the permission of the local ordinary or pastor"
A garden, beach or hotel?1118 §2"The local ordinary can permit a marriage to be celebrated in another suitable place"; the wording is "can permit", so he may decline

The pastor cannot approve a §2 place alone, so that request goes up to the diocese and takes time. Our advice on the order of asking: your own parish first, on what it allows and charges, before you put a deposit on a chapel two provinces away. A 50-guest budget has no room for a lost deposit. Ask the chapel the same week whether it has a resident priest. If not, you need your own officiant and must fit the wedding around that priest's schedule, and a priest you bring needs delegation under canon 1108.

Whether the ceremony is within Mass is settled with the priest, not the venue. For Your Marriage, a site of the US bishops' conference, says the wedding of two Catholics "will normally take place within a Mass", and that the second and third forms are "structured around the celebration of the Liturgy of the Word". Our ceremony order guide has the published length estimates.

Match the room to your fifty

Our view: fifty guests in a large parish church may look sparse in photos, and fifty in a small chapel may leave relatives standing. Neither is fixable on the day, so check before you book.

RoomWhat can go wrong at 50Before booking
Large parish churchGuests spread out and the front rows may look sparse in wide shotsAsk whether the rear section can be roped off, and seat forward
Chapel at or near capacityIf it is full, no room for a plus-one or a wheelchairGet the number in writing and count the pews yourself
Any small, enclosed roomIf it is full, heat and audibility may sufferAsk what air-conditioning costs and whether a microphone is provided

Do not rely on a stated capacity. Walk the space and count the seats. Ask which floral installations, candles or draping are allowed, and get the limits in writing.

If the room is small, tell every supplier the real capacity and your entourage count, and ask what crew size they will bring. Comfort is worth one direct question: a 2018 review of Philippine parish fees found that some churches "charge extra for more elaborate church decor, air-conditioning, or professional musicians", so air-conditioning may be a line item.

The costs that refuse to shrink

Start from our wedding cost guide for a rough total and treat it as an estimate, not a quote. Our view: at 50 guests, venue type and supplier packages may decide the total more than the headcount does. For a published range, Nuptials.ph's intimate wedding cost guide (June 3, 2025) says the overall range is based on "various Filipino wedding forums and budget breakdowns":

ItemNuptials.ph rangeWhat it says
Overall intimate wedding₱50,000 to ₱250,000Depends on venue, food and suppliers
Venue₱10,000 to ₱50,000Small gardens, restaurants and similar
Church wedding fees₱5,000 to ₱25,000Higher for a sought-after parish
Catering for 30 to 50 guests₱15,000 to ₱50,000At ₱500 to ₱1,000 per head

These are ranges from one wedding site, not quotes. Our intimate wedding guide puts them next to the rest of the budget.

The first six rows come from that 2018 review by Positively Filipino (October 2018), which names what moved the price at the parishes it looked at: the church itself, "the day of the week and time of the wedding", parishioner status, air-conditioning, the choir, and an overtime penalty at some parishes. Guest count is not on that list, which does not prove it never matters, so ask. Its peso figures are out of date, so ask for the current schedule.

Catering is the row that can move against you. Some caterers set a minimum headcount, and if you fall under it you can still be billed for the minimum. Nuptials.ph (February 2020) gives the example: "if their minimum is a package deal of 100 guests at P600 per plate, if you only have 95 guests confirmed, you'll still have to pay P60,000." Ask every caterer two questions: what is your minimum headcount, and does the per-head rate change below it?

Inviting fifty, and confirming fifty

At 200 guests a few no-shows are a small share. At 50, one absent couple is four percent of the room.

  1. Set the cap before you name anyone, and decide whether the entourage counts inside it.
  2. Decide the plus-one rule once and apply it to everyone; see wedding plus-one policy.
  3. Invite the entourage and the parents' names first; those seats cannot be reclaimed.
  4. Set an RSVP deadline early enough to release seats to a second tier, and print it on the invitation.
  5. Re-confirm every yes in the final two weeks. A yes from three months ago is a real risk here.
  6. Give the parish and the caterer your number on the dates their contracts specify.

Copy this for the re-confirmation, one paragraph per line:

Hi [Name], we are keeping our church wedding to 50 seats, so every seat matters.
Can you still come on [date], [time], at [church]?
Please reply by [date]. If your plans change, tell us right away so we can offer your seat to someone else.
Thank you!

A digital invitation with personal guest links gives you a list you can read at a glance. On Imbitasyon Ko, the Free plan allows 20 guests with personal links and shows only the first 10 entourage entries on the public page. A guest entry can cover a party of up to 10, so a list of households may fit; a list of 50 individual names needs Standard (₱499, one-time) or above. Even the trimmed roster above is about 18 entries by our count when parents and sponsor pairs are entered as pairs, so an entourage this size also needs Standard. See pricing. If cutting to the cap is where you are stuck, cutting a guest list without a family feud has the tiering method, and the intimate wedding guide weighs going small at all.

Fifty guests is a design, not a downgrade. Settle the entourage first because it spends the list, ask your own parish before you fall for a chapel, get the real seat count in writing, and price catering knowing that minimums work against you.

Frequently asked questions

How many of 50 seats does the entourage use?

In our example, a full roster of parents, sponsors, best man, maid of honor, bridal party, bearers and flower girls uses 32 seats, leaving 18 for everyone else. A trimmed roster uses 22, leaving 28. The couple is not counted in either total.

How many principal sponsors should a small church wedding have?

Nuptials.ph suggests two to four pairs for small weddings. Manila Cathedral caps sponsors at eight pairs, and canon 1108 requires two witnesses, not a sponsor count. Your own parish sets the number that applies to you, so ask before you invite anyone.

Can we hold a small wedding in a chapel outside our parish?

Only with permission. Canon 1115 places a wedding in a parish where either of you has a domicile, quasidomicile or month long residence, and marriages can be celebrated elsewhere with the permission of the proper ordinary or pastor. Ask your own parish before you pay a deposit.

Do fewer guests lower the parish or church fee?

Not that we could find. A 2018 review listed the church itself, the day and time, whether you are a parishioner, air-conditioning, the choir and overtime as what moves the price. Guest count was not among them. Ask your parish whether any fee scales with attendance.

Will a caterer charge less for only 50 guests?

Not always. Some caterers set a minimum headcount. Nuptials.ph gives the example of a 100-guest package at 600 pesos a plate: with only 95 confirmed you still pay 60,000 pesos. Ask each caterer for its minimum and whether the per-head rate changes below it.

Does a church wedding have to be a Mass?

It depends on your priest. The US bishops' site For Your Marriage says the wedding of two Catholics will normally take place within a Mass, and that the second and third forms are structured around the Liturgy of the Word. Ask your priest which form your parish uses.

Can I send a 50-guest digital invitation on the free plan?

Not as 50 individual names. The Free plan allows 20 guests with personal links and shows only the first 10 entourage entries on the public page. A guest entry can cover a party of up to 10, so households may fit; Standard removes both limits.
